The Secrets We Keep

“We did good.” She placed her water bottle in the cup holder. “I was sitting here thinking about the first day we met you.”

“I’ve been thinking about that day a lot lately.” I kissed her hand, cherishing every memory we made over the years. “How can she be eighteen already?”

  “Time goes.”

“I’ve had so many wonderful days since I met you. Memories that I never thought I’d have.”

“Do you want to know which one of the days was my favorite?”

  “Enlighten me.”

“When you told me you wanted Zoey to change her last name to Trapp.”

“Ah, yes.” I grinned at the memory. “The day I proposed.”

  “Tell me again.”

“Tell you what?” I took her face between my hands. “How much I love you?”

“That’s always nice to hear but…” When she looked at me with her wide, engaging eyes I was at her absolute mercy.

“After I suggested we change Zoey’s last name to Trapp, I realized we couldn’t possibly do that if you didn’t change yours as well.”

“You wanted to officially make us a family.” She smiled as she mindlessly dropped her gaze to her wedding ring. I circled my finger over the large stone, recalling how she protested that it was too big. Silly woman.

“The day I asked you to marry me was one of the best days of my life.” Kissing her softly, I ran my thumb along her jaw. “The day I met you and Zoey in the park and the morning the twins were born rank right up there. You’ve made me one ecstatic man.”

“I couldn’t have asked for a better husband for me or a more perfect father for our kids. You’ll always be the love of my life.”

The sincerity in her eyes, the love in her tone, and the fact that she was mine were enough to propel me toward her, kissing her slowly, running my hands through her hair, I intensified our bond. She kissed me back with a passion that fueled us both. She sighed against my lips when the laughter of some passing students brought us back to reality.

“Do you know how mortified Zoey would be if she knew we were making out on her college campus?” She ran her thing along my lips.

“That would be embarrassing.” I kissed her gently before starting the car. “We should probably get home to our twin terrors before they drive Alec crazy.”

“He’s so good with them. I called when you were still with Zoey. They’re in the pool and he said we should take our time. He ordered pizza.”

“Should we go to dinner?” I drove onto the main road. “We can go to that restaurant on the river you like so much.”

“The one with the sailboats? I love it there.”

“I’ll call ahead and make sure we get the table by the fireplace.”

  “You spoil me.”

  “You deserve it.”

“I love you.” She took my hand. “Zoey was right.”

  “About?”

“Something good happening to us that day.”

“She’s always been a smart girl.”

“She gets that from me.” Her melodic laughter filled the car. “I’m certain of it.”

  “Absolutely, my love.”
