Dying to Love (An FBI Romance Thriller Book 18)
Page 49
Your anger is something that scares me.
Goodbye.
Thank you for the six years. They were the best years of my life, and I won’t regret them—even how they ended.
Forever,
Elizabeth Renee LaRue-Whitefox.
He couldn’t breathe.
The tears in his eyes overwhelmed him. He’d realized what he’d done to his life. The anger didn’t make it better. It only made it worse. It had been a downward spiral for a while, and now he’d hit rock bottom.
He thought the recovery from being abducted had been his rock bottom, but he was wrong. This was it.
Losing his wife and family had taken him down a notch. Ethan was taken to his knees and lost.
As he stood there, he began praying her leaving wasn’t true. Maybe she just wanted to hurt him to pay him back. This had to be a big joke.
A misunderstanding.
There was no way…
The second he walked into the kitchen, he realized the magnitude of what he’d done.
There, on the counter, were her rings—the engagement and wedding band—and to add insult to injury, the necklace he once gave her.
The key to his heart.
Elizabeth had given it back.
His wife was gone.
His brother was gone.
Even Chris and Bethe were gone.
Ethan slid to the floor and stared at the wall.
Now what?
How did he go on living?
As he sat there, he thought of one thing.
The damn dream.
He was the battered and broken bird, and Elizabeth had flown the nest. Callen had followed.
And he was alone.
To die.
By himself.
Broken by his own anger.
Broken by no one but himself.
Now what was he supposed to do? The only woman he’d ever loved had walked away. She’d taken his whole world with her, and he couldn’t follow.
God.
He couldn’t follow.
Yet.
He needed some time.
Meanwhile…
The game was beginning.
It had been almost two years since she’d rattled Elizabeth’s cage. She’d watched, she’d waited, and she plotted her new plan.
Oh, Bonnie wasn’t worried.
This time, she’d take the woman to her knees, and then she’d play in her blood until she was no more. Only, she wasn’t coming alone.
No.
What fun would that be?
She was bringing her little friend. What was Bonnie without a partner? What kind of duo would she be if she didn’t have someone to revel in the pleasure with?
She’d be nothing.
Well, Bonnie knew how to find someone just as sick as she was, and she would make Elizabeth work for it.
Her protégé was evil.
She was twisted.
This woman would be her equal, and together, they would take Elizabeth down.
It was coming.
It was years in the making.
The Blackhawks had no clue that their time was running out. Before long, blood would be spilled.
In the end, it would come down to the two of them.
Who was smarter.
Who was better?
And who could be the killer.
There was one thing for sure.
Revenge has Come, and Elizabeth wouldn’t see it coming.

Six Weeks Later
He’d done his job, and he’d done it well.
For the last seven weeks, six days, and fifteen hours, he’d covered for Gabe and held the FBI in check. He’d weathered the professional storm, keeping his cool, running it like the Director of the FBI, and making it count.
Now he was done.
Ethan had to sacrifice going after his wife in order to keep his promise to Gabriel Rothschild. When his wife walked away, leaving her rings, their marriage, and his mistakes behind, Ethan couldn’t follow.
He’d had to make a choice.
He’d chose his integrity. Now it was over, and he could regroup.
It was time.
As Gabe returned to work in the morning, Ethan would be on the first flight to Salem, and all he could hope was his wife would take him back.
That she still loved him.
That she hadn’t forgotten him.
After everything they’d been through for the six beautiful years, he prayed she loved him even a little bit. At this point, he’d take the crumbs.
He’d take anything she handed him.
He’d suffered without them by his side. The anger, that once filled him, had been replaced by something so much worse.
Loneliness.
He hated it.
Ethan had never been more afraid in all of his life. At this point, he’d been in contact with his brother. They’d mended the fence. He no longer was angry with him.
Callen forgave him.
He forgave Callen.
Honestly, the man was doing exactly what he asked him to do. He told him stick by her no matter what, and he’d done just that. He’d kept his word.
Now he was helping Ethan repair what had happened.
If that was possible.
Each night, Ethan called his kids, told them he loved them, and read to them on the tablet. Each night, it was Callen who answered the ping, and never her.
It was never his Elizabeth.
He hoped one day she’d forgive him and answer just so he could hear her voice.
God!
He missed it so damn much that it hurt.
He wanted to see her.
He wanted to hold her.
But he couldn’t.
He’d told her he never wanted to see her again, and she gave him his wish.
He was King Midas. He had everything but he wanted more. He touched the relationship and it ended. He’d turned his life to gold, but in the process lost his love.
He was so empty.
On the chain around his neck, he wore his wife’s rings. One day, if he was lucky, she’d let him slip them back onto her finger. One day, she’d forgive him.
Or not.
All he knew was he was done.
He’d done his job. He’d held up alone, and he was finished.
Talking off his badge and gun, he scribbled a note and left it on Gabe’s desk.
He would be back tomorrow, and by then, Ethan would be in Salem.
If they quit, he quit.
He was going home too.
Only, he only prayed his wife was going to welcome him there. He couldn’t blame her. He was a horrible person, and he knew it. His jealousy festered, and he’d made her choose.
Well, he’d lost.
Now it was be angry, or it was tuck his tail between his legs and find love again.
The media kept whispering of infidelity.
They kept trying to plaster his face with other women all over the internet.
All Ethan could hope was Elizabeth would believe him.
He would never stray.
He’d hold on until the end of his life.
He’d learned a valuable lesson.
Her past didn’t matter. Only she did.
Now it was time.
Heading out of the FBI building, he knew it was likely the last time. Ethan was staying where his family was, even if he had to sleep in the yard.
He was going to be a father.
Be a husband.
Be a better person.
Ethan needed a second chance. He needed redemption. The only way to get it?
Ethan Blackhawk, in order to get back the only woman he’d ever love, had to give up the mistress that monopolized his time.
He was done with the FBI.
For his wife.
NOTE from Morgan,
Read the next Littlemoon book, Kiss of Souls, to get Elizabeth’s point of vie
w over the next eight weeks of them being apart. That book will be a crossover.
Will Ethan be able to heal the wound he’s created, or is it really over?
Only time will tell.
