Katelyn made a lot of excuses for not drawing while she was married and raising her kids. What kinds of excuses have you made for not doing what you love to do? What steps could you take to foster your talents or reach your goals?

The train is an important symbol in Katelyn’s life. When she stands still and watches the fast-moving locomotive blow past her, it represents the powerful energy that drives her hectic world. What are some other things the train symbolizes to Katelyn aside from her life’s journey? What object best represents the path your life is taking?

Sadie’s beauty salon, like many salons, is more than just a place to get your hair done. It’s an important place of social interaction for the Little Springs Ladies’ Society. What’s the biggest lesson Shirley learns from the matrons of Little Springs? Do you believe that Shirley has truly changed and grown over the course of the book or do you think that she will revert to her old ways?

  Dear Reader,

Life is hard. And if we’re being honest here, then it’s okay to admit that like Katelyn we’ve all gotten lost at times. We’re so busy trying to survive day to day that we can’t see beyond the here and now. Usually it’s not until we face an unexpected crisis that we wake up and realize life is passing us by and some of the promises we made to our younger selves have gone unfulfilled. It’s often heartache that makes us pause and examine our lives—how far we’ve come, how far we have to go and the future we left behind.

Only we can determine if what we left behind is the something that’s still missing from our lives. Whatever we learn, we should use the information to live a fuller life or simply appreciate the life we have a little bit more. And if we discover that it’s time to let go of those promises, that’s okay, too. Because when it’s all said and done, life is all about the journey and not so much the accomplishments.
