Secrets of the Falls (Twelve Oaks Farm Book 3)

At the end of the drive he closed his eyes and moaned out loud. He whispered, “It is inevitable that we will be lovers, Lacy. Of course not for long but he would have little use for her once she was no longer chaste. “Tsk, tsk,” he whispered. “Such a shame.”
He backed out into the street, threw the gear shift into drive, and continued on to school. If he didn’t hurry, he’d be late for his first class. It had caused a thorn in his side to have to change his schedule. Lacy’s brother-in-law, Josh Wilson had more pull than he gave him credit for. It made him madder than hell when he was called into his professor’s office and told he couldn’t continue attending his English class. Now because of his new schedule he had to leave home an hour earlier.
Bret turned up the volume on his radio and tapped out the beat of the music on the steering wheel. He peered into his rearview mirror and noticed a patrol car following him. With a quick glance at his speedometer he determined he wasn’t speeding. Bret slowed his speed so the officer would go around him. Cops made him nervous.
When the sound of a siren saturated the car, Bret looked in his rearview mirror and saw the blue light flashing. “What the hell.”
He pulled to the curb, grabbed his registration out of the glove compartment, and waited for the officer who didn’t seem to be in any hurry. Lowering his window, he glanced at the officer’s badge. “What is the problem, Officer Bristow?”
“May I see your license and registration please?”
“I wasn’t speeding, officer.” The state patrolman never said a word. He read the information on his license and registration card. He had a thick black mustache and wore dark sunglasses. His uniform was a tad too tight on his stout body. He looked more like a porn star instead of a police officer.
“Will you please step out of the car?” The officer opened the door and stepped to the side.
“Not until you tell me what this is about. I have done nothing wrong.”
“Please step out of the vehicle.”
“I’m going to be late for class. I need to go.” Bret put his hand on the gear shift.
The officer took out his taser and shouted, “Get out of the car or I’ll light you up.”
Bret put his hands in the air. “Okay, okay. I had no idea we had Barney Fife working the streets.” He stumbled out of the car.
“Put your hands behind your back.”
“There is no need to cuff me, officer. I have done nothing wrong.” The officer holstered his tazer. Bret placed his hands behind his back and let the officer cuff him.
“Are you carrying any weapons or drugs?”
“No, sir.” Bret gritted his teeth while being subjected to a search. The officer’s hand patted down his legs and even between his legs. The man had no idea the trouble he was going to be in when he told his father of the treatment. “Do you know who I am?”
“Sure. I just read your license. Your name is Bret Robertson.” He pushed Bret against the car. “Do you mind if I search your car?”
“Yes, I do mind. I’m late for school. My father is Sebastian Robertson.”
“Doesn’t ring a bell.” He tilted his head and pressed the button on his radio. “I need a search warrant at the corner of Holden and Green.”
“I’m captain of the Duke basketball Team.”
“I don’t follow basketball.”
“Bret turned up his nose and looked at the roll of fat on his stomach. “It’s obvious you don’t play any sport. Unless beer drinking could be considered a sport.” Bret got a weird feeling in his stomach. This was more than a normal traffic stop. “You have no probable cause. You have no right to search my car.”
Thirty minutes later a cruiser pulled to the curb behind Officer Bristow’s squad car. A tall man emerged and sauntered toward them as if he had all the time in the world. It was as if they were trying to antagonize him. He bit his lower lip to keep from lashing out. That was all he needed was to be arrested for some bogus charge.
Bret looked at Officer Lane’s badge so he could also include him in his complaint. Both officers would regret harassing him. Before the day was out, neither would be employed. Officer Bristow took the warrant and held it up in front of his face so he could read it since he was still handcuffed.
Officer Bristow leaned into Bret’s Jaguar and opened the console. Bret’s mouth fell open in shock when the officer held up a small bag of cocaine. “Is this yours?” Someone had set him up. When he found out who, he would kill them.

“I got a call from Lacy. She said Bret Robertson was outside her building last night.”
“Yes, I heard.” Dylan never looked at Josh instead keeping his eyes on Robertson sitting on the other side of the two-way mirror. This time he wasn’t so cocky. He was sweating bullets. The drug charge would keep him behind bars long enough for him to get the evidence he needed to charge him with Tiffany Swift’s death.
Robertson placed his chin on his folded arms on the metal table. They had kept him waiting for over an hour. It was obvious his patience was wearing thin.
Josh looked over his shoulder to make sure no one could hear before he leaned over and asked, “Did you have anything to do with Robertson being arrested?”
“I’m pleading the fifth.”
Josh placed his hand on Dylan’s shoulder. “Thank you because I was contemplating murder. He’s stalking the wrong person.”
“He’s sick. I think he gets off stalking Lacy. At least now he can’t harm her. I’ve convinced Director Tate to allow me one more week on the investigation into who killed Tiffany Swift.” While CSI didn’t find a trace of evidence on her body, he had it on good authority that Robertson left the party with her. It was brilliant to dispose of Miss Swift’s body in the pond because water would wash away any evidence left behind. It led him to believe Miss Swift might not have been his first murder.
“Roberson thinks he has gotten away with murder. I can’t find the evidence to prove Robertson killed Miss Swift, but I’ve got another angle. More than likely Lacy’s not the first woman he’s stalked. I’ll see if I can find any other women he drugged and then raped.”
Agent Stan Jacobs opened the door and entered the viewing room. He handed one of the pictures of Lacy in the red and black teddy to Josh. “I haven’t had any luck discovering who’s responsible for photo shopping the picture of Lacy. Whoever is responsible is good.”
“I want Robertson behind bars for life. We have to find evidence that will prove he is a sex offender.”
“The picture is from a Victoria Secret’s magazine.”
“How do you know,” asked Dylan.
“I bought the same teddy for Molly for Christmas. Picked it out of the catalog myself.” Dylan smiled. “What’s on your mind?”
“I’m imagining Molly dressed in the teddy. You’ll probably be announcing she’s going to have another baby any day now.” Stan hit him on the arm leaving a huge frog. “Ouch, that hurt.”
“If you two children will excuse me, I’m going to interrogate the scumbag.”
Dylan wrapped his hand around Josh’s arm to stop him. “Director Tate said for you to stay away from Robertson.”
Josh jerked away from Dylan. “I promise to keep my cool.”
Dylan had a bad feeling. If Robertson said the wrong thing, Josh would lose his temper and punch him. Even though he was the most level headed agent on their team, this was personal.
From his viewpoint, he watched Josh enter and sit across from Robertson. He sat up straight and squared his shoulders. “I want to see my lawyer.”
Josh gave him a pointed look. “I think he got caught in traffic.”
Robertson pointed his finger at Josh. “You’re not going to get away with this. Those drugs were planted. Do you think I’m stupid enough to drive around with drugs in my car?”
“That’s what they all say.”
“I’m going to sue you for planting evidence. I’ll have your badge.” Robertson’s tone was more violent than a shout.
“You think you’re so much smarter than everyone else. This time you won’t be paroled. The drug charge will stick.”
“You don’t scare me. My lawyer will have me out of here just like that.” Robertson snapped his fingers.
“You should have done your homework before you drugged and attempted to rape my sister-in-law. Now you have the whole bureau breathing down your back. I will see to it that you spend the rest of your life in prison.” Josh placed his palms on the table and leaned in closer to Robertson. “I have the resources to make sure you never see the outside of prison again. You’re going to be somebody’s pretty little bitch.” The color drained from Robertson’s face. “A handsome fellow like yourself will be gobbled up the first day you hear the door lock behind you. You won’t be so pretty and cocky long.”
“You can’t do this to me. I have done nothing wrong. Lacy asked for the ecstasy. She asked me to screw her.”
Josh bolted across the table and wrapped his hands around Robertson’s neck. Nose to nose, he whispered, “Do you have any idea how much I’d love to kill you right now? I don’t give a rat’s ass what you say. You attempted to rape Lacy.”
Stan barged into the room. “Special Agent Wilson!”
Josh loosened his grip around Robertson’s neck. He raked his hands over Robertson’s shirt as if to get out the wrinkles left there by his hands. “Mark my word. You’ll not get away with your crimes. I’ll make sure the district attorney gets the evidence the officers found in your Jag. Should keep you behind bars for a while.” Josh whispered so only Robertson could hear, “Long enough for us to get the evidence we need to convict you as a sex offender. How’s that going to look on your resume? That is if you ever get out of prison. We’re looking to put you away for life.”
“I want to press charges. He assaulted me.”
“I didn’t see him put his hands on you.” Stan placed his hand on Josh’s shoulder and jerked him around. “Come with me.”
Dylan clenched his hands into fists. Thankfully Josh did as Stan asked and walked out of the room. Robertson had that effect on people. It was difficult not to put a fist in his face.
Chapter Twelve
Every muscle in her body was tense when Lacy pulled into the parking lot at Meadowlark Apartments. Dylan wouldn’t tell her why he needed to see her. He was very vague on the phone. She closed her car door and gripped her purse so tight her knuckles turned white. If it was good news, Dylan would have told her over the phone. It must mean he had bad news about Bret.
Outside on the lawn, he was waiting for her. With long strides he hurried to her side. Tucking his arm into hers, he said, “We can talk inside.”
Lacy wasn’t so sure that was a good idea. She dug in her heels. “Wait a minute. It’s such a gorgeous morning let’s talk out here on the bench.” A pretty little garden with a wooden bench nestled under a huge red maple looked like the perfect place to talk. She didn’t trust herself to go to his apartment. Just his hand against her arm had her body tingling all over.
“I want you to see my apartment.”
“That’s not a good idea.”
“I’m not going to hurt you, Lacy.”
A voice in her head kept shouting, Don’t be alone with him! You can’t trust him. Remember what happened last time.
He put more pressure on her arm and led her toward the front of his building. She opened her mouth to protest, but a couple walking hand and hand were moving toward them on the sidewalk. Both nodded and spoke to Dylan. By the time they were out of hearing distance, he was opening the door to his apartment and shoving her inside.
“Would you like something to drink?”
“No, thank you.” He filled a cup with coffee from the coffeemaker on the counter. Leaning against the counter, he took a sip of coffee. He smiled and she couldn’t keep her eyes off his beautiful full mouth and perfect white teeth.
She tried to focus on something other than him. Her eyes roamed over the spacious room. His apartment was gorgeous. Black granite tops and white cabinets looked spectacular together. The living area had a huge royal blue sectional with a matching recliner. She imagined him relaxing in it at night with the remote control resting on the arm. A multicolored rug covered the wood floor. When she turned her attention back to him, he was watching her over the rim of his cup.
“It is an amazing place. I’ll miss it when I go back to my shabby little house.”
“How can the bureau afford to put you up in such an expensive apartment?”
“I have to look the part. The members of Dark Knight Frat House think I’m a drug dealer. I sell them drugs and drug dealers make a lot of money.” He pushed away from the counter and took her purse from her hand. He threw it on the sofa. “Sit down, relax. I’m not going to bite you.”
The thought of him sinking his teeth into her had her blushing all the way to the roots of her hair. Instead of sitting on the sectional, she sat at the kitchen table. “The sofa will be much more comfortable.”
“This is fine.” Just the way he looked at her made her feel light headed. Big gray eyes locked on her and he sat at the chair opposite her. “Did you plant the drugs in Bret’s car?” When Josh phoned her and told her Bret had been arrested for possession of drugs, her first thought had been of Dylan. He said he would find a way to get Bret off her back.
“I’m not going to admit to wrong doing, Lacy.” He winked at her. “I’m a FBI Agent. If I were caught breaking the law, I’d lose my position at the bureau.”
“Thank you.”
He cocked his head to the side. “I told you I would take care of Robertson. I keep my promises. It will give us time to get more evidence.”
Seconds ticked by as they sat staring at each other. “Is that what you wanted to talk to me about?”
“I really wanted you to see my apartment. In a few days I’ll be back in the hood.”
She bolted to her feet, grabbed her purse, and took a step toward the door. “I’ve told you this relationship has to end. I can’t condone what you do for a living. You shouldn’t have invited me here under false pretences.”
He caught her before she made it to the door. He wrapped his hand around the top of her arm. “Come on, Lacy. You want me as much as I want you. Deny it.” He wiggled his eyebrows. “Admit you have wild lustful dreams about me.”
“This is serious. I don’t think you take anything serious.” In all honesty, she couldn’t deny the attraction.
He grasped her chin to hold her in place. His mouth was on hers. She struggled to fight the desire sweeping through her. “Don’t over think this, Lacy.” He took her hand and led her across the floor. “I can’t wait for you to see the bedroom.”
Lacy didn’t even notice the bedroom because the moment they walked through the door, Dylan began to undress. In no time he stood before her completely naked. “Here let me help you with your clothes.” He unbuttoned her shirt and jerked it over her arms causing her to gasp. His movements were quick and intense. Maybe he thought she would change her mind. He unbuttoned and unzipped her blue jean skirt. His thumbs hooked into the waist of her panties. He rolled them down her legs. His eyes traveled up and down her body. “Those are some mighty long legs, Lacy.”
With a flick of his wrist he unsnapped her bra and tossed it on the end of the bed. He cupped her breasts tightly causing her heart to pound with passion. “I don’t know which I like better. These,” his hands moved from her breasts to her bottom, “or your ass.” He squeezed her tight.
Placing his hands on her shoulders, he shoved sending her falling to the bed, then he fell on top of her. Hands moved over her body causing her to moan out loud. “You have no idea the nights I have lain awake fantasizing about this. Once with you was not enough. It will never be enough.”
Lacy ran her fingernails down his back. “I have a tiger in my bed.” Gray eyes full of desire peered down at her. Again his eyes took a tour of her body before his gaze shifted to her face. Yearning for more, she tugged his hand b
etween her legs. His fingers were on her, then inside her. She pushed her pelvic up to meet his touch. His tongue slipped between her lips and he plundered her mouth, possessing her. She was powerless to resist his allure. His lips traveled across her neck, her chest, and stopped at her breast. He drove her crazy with desire as he sucked on her hard nipple. Then he switched to the other side and did the same thing. His tongue swirled and circled around her nipple. She fisted her hands in his hair and held him close to her breast.
He stretched out over her pressing himself between her legs. She was dripping wet and he slid in easily. Her eyes widened as his penis filled her. She took a deep gulp of air and sighed. The sight of him watching her with those sexy, gray eyes was intoxicating. His mouth locked over hers and she trembled with lust and need. Never in her life would she have thought something as simple as a kiss could bring such ecstasy. But then there was nothing simple in the way he kissed her. It was more like worship. His tongue swirled inside her mouth causing burning desire. He grabbed her hips and pushed even deeper. He worked her with a gentle rhythm. She let out a little moan every time he moved inside her. The movement of his hips became more desperate. Nearing his climax, his breathing increased. He gritted his teeth and moaned as an orgasm surged through his body. It was a wondrous sight to behold, to know she had that affect on him. Lacy pounded against Dylan as her orgasm began. Crying out loud, she lifted her hips arching against him while he held her in place by her hips. She convulsed against him and shuddered.
They lay face to face. His fingers stroked a fat, blond curl. “What are you thinking?”
