Bethan had been fast and hard asleep after the momentous decision to grab her life back when she was woken by a loud hammering on her door. What on earth was that noise? For god’s sake, she thought, it’s Sunday morning, what on earth is so urgent to warrant all that noise?
She leapt out of bed and pulled on her robe before shouting in the direction of the door, “I’m coming, I’m coming already, where’s the fire?”
As she unlocked the door it burst open and she was grabbed in a bear hug.
“What the…” she shrieked.
“I have missed you so much, I had to come and tell you face to face that I love you and need you to be with me.”
It was Charlie, standing there in her hallway declaring his love for her and nearly crushing her ribs as he held her tight.
Bethan thought that maybe she was still asleep and this was all a dream. She pinched herself; no, she was definitely awake and Charlie was here and telling her he loved her. She couldn’t believe it.
“Charlie, why didn’t you tell me you were in England?” she gasped trying to extricate herself from his embrace.
“I came straight here from the airport, I couldn’t bear to be away from you for another minute,” he said. “Now, is there any coffee going, I need to talk to you?”
Once the coffee was made they settled on the sofa in the sitting room.
“I want you to come to the States with me,” he said bluntly. “I love you and want to be with you for always and this is the only way I can think of to make it happen right now.”
Bethan was stunned. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“I love you and I’ve missed you more than you’ll ever know. But what will I do about my job; I only have two weeks holiday leave due.”
“You don’t need the job, I want you to be with me forever and I intend to look after you,” he said calmly. “But I do want you to be sure it’s what you want before you burn all your bridges. So we’ll make sure the rent on your flat is paid for the next six months so you still have somewhere to come back to if you decide you can’t bear being with me. I know things are moving quickly but I realised pretty soon after I got back home that I love you and I need you with me for always.”
Charlie told her that he had already bought her an open ended return flight so she could come home whenever she wanted if she wasn’t happy.
They sat in silence for a while as Bethan tried to get her head round what was happening. Charlie loved her and wanted her to give up her life in England to live with him in America after spending only a few days together. It was madness and common sense told her to say no but heart was screaming at her, “Go!”
What had she got to lose? She had no responsibilities other than her job and she was not sure anyone in England would even notice she was gone. It would be an adventure even if it didn’t work out.
Then she remembered the two words that she had used to make decisions when she’d first met him: Carpe Diem – seize the day! That was easy, she thought, the decision had now been made.
“When will we go?” she asked. “I have arrangements to make.”
Charlie leapt up from the sofa, pulled her to her feet and picked her up and swung her round.
“Oh Bethan, you’ve made me the happiest man alive; you won’t regret it,” he said with obvious delight. “We’ll be going on Tuesday so you’ll have all day tomorrow to sort stuff out.”
“Will you put me down, you’ll do yourself an injury,” she laughed. “You move fast, don’t you? I’ve just made a life changing decision and you want me to sort it in just one day – you’re mad!”
“How long can it take to pack a bag? You won’t need much to start; treat it as a holiday. We can buy anything you forget to pack. You can come back to finalise everything when you’ve had a chance to see if you like living with me. Once Bella is back to normal I’ll be back and forth to England for a while to finish the job I started and you can come with me when I travel.”
Bethan went and got the bottle of champagne from the kitchen that Charlie had left along with two glasses to toast their future together.
The rest of the day was spent in bed making love and planning their life together. Bethan was breathless at the speed things were moving; twelve hours ago she had been planning to ring Jo and Ashley to arrange a night out. Now she would be ringing them to tell them she would be living in America from Tuesday. She knew they would try and talk her out of it; they would tell her to wait – but wait for what? Wait until she was too old to be spontaneous; wait until everything was meticulously planned; life was too short and Bethan was going to take the opportunity to be with man she loved.
On Tuesday morning Bethan was packed and ready to go. She spoken to her boss who had agreed to two weeks paid leave and another month unpaid. The rent on her flat was paid monthly from her bank so she was just going to let it run until she’d made her final decision. So she had not closed all the doors in the event she wanted to return.
But she knew she wouldn’t be back; she knew she loved Charlie with all her heart and he loved her. She was happier than she’d ever been in her life.
“Come on my darling, it’s time to go,” Charlie said kissing her lightly on the cheek. “Mike’s waiting outside.”
He took her cases and waited while she locked the door.
Bethan was off to start a completely new life and she had absolutely no regrets – she was seizing the day.
