Gerardo points out the newest plaque to Abbie as she reads the inscription, understanding slowly dawning across her face when she glances back at me in awe.
When she turns, she finds me on bended knee, ring box in my hand. Gerardo has discreetly blended in the background, being our photographer for the special, orchestrated moment.
Abbie’s gasp turns into a hiccup and a sob as her hand comes up to cover her open mouth. My chest is tight with both emotion and panic, more so than some of the missions I’ve been on where my life was on the line.
Today, though, my future is on the line with the decision Abbie has yet to give me.
“Abbie, from the moment I met you, I couldn’t let go, even though you tried hard to shake me off your trail. But I’m a frogman and don’t give up that easily. And Turtle, I know this might be a bit soon for you, and I get that. You might need time to decide…” I let out a nervous chuckle. “I guess what I’m trying to say is, will you marry me?”
I’m suddenly staring upward as I’m thrown off balance and onto my back as Abbie tackles me to the ground.
“Yes, yes, yes!” She exclaims between kisses that she places all over my face, cheeks and lips. “This is one decision I don’t need time to make because I know it’s the right one. I have no doubt you are my lobster.”
“You mean, SEAL.”
“Yeah, that too.”
