OK. 빅뱅 사랑해요!
This is the ‘Age of K-Pop’!
근 석 안녕하세요. 묘묘, you look happy.

묘 묘 Thanks to 텔레비전(television). By watching 뮤직뱅크(Music Bank) on KBS, 쇼 음악중심(Show Music Center) on MBC and 인기가요(Popular Songs) on SBS, I can listen to all the latest popular 한국 songs. If I want to listen to 한국 songs, I search K-Pop on 유투브(YouTube).
근 석 Even though you are 중국 사람, you know K-Pop better than 한국 사람 like me!
묘 묘 It’s because K-Pop makes me happy.

① 이게 뭐예요?
이게 means ‘this thing(for subject)’. It’s a contraction of 이것이. 이것 also means ‘this thing’, and 이 is a subject marker(We will look at this further later on). Finally, 뭐 is ‘what’. Thus, 이게 뭐예요? means ‘What is this (thing)?’. 그게 뭐예요? is ‘What is it?’ and 저게 뭐예요? is ‘What is that over there?’.
② 네
네 means ‘yes’. We use 예 to mean ‘yes’ as well, but we use 네 more often.

Various usages of Korean 네
바 트 Teacher.
공 주 네?
바 트 You say ‘yes’ as 네 in Korean, don’t you?
공 주 네.
바 트 Then, why do Koreans say 네 when they are surprised?
공 주 네 has various meanings in Korean. Basically, it’s a positive answer to a question. We also say 네 when we can’t hear something well, and when we are surprised.
바 트 How do you distinguish these meanings from each other?
공 주 By intonation. 네 meaning ‘right’ or ‘yes’ is short and clear. When we want to hear something again, or when we are surprised, we raise the intonation at the end. When we are thinking more about our answer, we stretch out the syllable at the end. You can figure out the meaning by the speaker’s facial expression.
바 트 네~ Now I got it. I’ll use 네 correctly from now on.

① 이름이 뭐예요?
이름 is ‘name’, 이 is a subject marker and 뭐 is ‘what’. So 이름이 뭐예요? is ‘What is your name?’.
② 어느 나라 사람이에요?
어느 is ‘which’ and 나라 is ‘country’. So 어느 나라 사람이에요? is ‘Which country person are you?’ or ‘Where are you from?’.
③ 마리 씨
씨 means ‘Mr. / Mrs. / Miss’. Use 씨 with someone’s full name in formal situations, and with someone’s first name in friendly situations. We don’t use it when addressing older people or after a Korean family name alone – it’s very rude in these situations.
Grammar
● noun + 이 / 가 : subject marker
–이 / –가 is a subject marker in Korean. We use this marker after the subject noun of the sentence. When the final syllable of the noun ends in a consonant, we use – 이, and when the final syllable of the noun ends in a vowel, we use – 가. There is no space placed between the noun and 이 / 가.

Be careful with pronunciation in Korean
Yuna asks Pierre about his job.
유 나 직업이 뭐예요?
피에르 구찌(Gucci)예요.
유 나 구찌???
No, what’s your job?

Why do Koreans want to know so much about my private life?
마 리 흐엉 씨, I think 한국 사람 are interested in other-people’s private lives.
흐 엉 Why? What happened?
마 리 Yesterday I met Geunseok’s friends. Even though it was our first meeting, they asked me lots of personal questions.
흐 엉 I was not accustomed to those kinds of questions when I first came to 한국, either. But I understood why people ask them after I talked to my sister, who married a 한국 사람. She said that asking personal questions is common in 한국.
Asking you personal questions means showing an interest in you - to put it simply, it means wanting to be friends.
In addition, because 한국 사람 use an honorific speaking style to older people, they will also ask about age. After knowing your age, they will know how to talk to you.
But some people ask out of curiosity. I was really surprised when someone asked how much money I make. So I politely declined to answer.
마 리 I see. From now on, I’ll have to think about what these questions are really asking before I answer.
