‘I’m delighted for you both.’ Lucy sounded sincere but there was a huge lump in her throat. Her life was about to become lonely again, when they moved out. ‘But I shall miss you all terribly.’
‘Do you want us to find somewhere new to live?’ Anna asked sadly. This was something she hadn’t considered but she could hardly expect her aunt’s generosity to extend any further.
‘Well of course I don’t. I can’t bear the thought of living alone again, but you won’t want a doddery old lady living with you.’
‘Oh Lucy . . . if you’ll let us stay here, we’d love it, wouldn’t we darling?’ Joe said.
‘Of course we would. If you really wouldn’t mind. Oh and you’re not a doddery old lady by the way.’
‘Oh, my dears, that’s wonderful, quite wonderful.’ They put their arms round each other.
Holly came in from the garden, covered in mud.
‘I want hugs as well. And I want Joe for my daddy. Please.’ They all stared at the little girl. How could she have understood all that was going on?
‘Sam and Jake said Uncle Joe’s like my daddy. Auntie Evie wants it too.’ Her words sounded clear and firm, much more than her usual baby babble. She was growing up.
‘Well, that’s great. I am going to be your daddy and your mummy is going to be Mrs Meredith. Very soon.’
‘A fambily,’ she squeaked.
‘Yes, darling, we’re all going to live together and be a very happy family.’
‘You know my dears, I’ve had a bottle of champagne ready for this day for simply ages. Thank heavens we can use it before it is quite past being drinkable.’
‘To what I know will be a very happy family,’ Lucy said, raising her glass a few minutes later.
‘To happy families and to the midwife’s new husband,’ Anna said.
‘And me,’ squeaked Holly. ‘To me as well.’
They all laughed and raised their glasses to Holly. She smiled happily and lifted her cup of orange.
‘Fambily,’ she said happily.
