“Hey Joey! Okay, so I need to go have a shower so I'll see you two at the diner afterwards?”
She arched her eyebrows at Joey and nodded her head towards Mike before jogging off towards the changing rooms. Both boys watched her go with a contented sigh before laughing about it together.
As they wandered slowly across the field that the track encircled it was in silence before Joey spoke up.
“Hey Mike?”
“Hmm?”
“How long have we known each other now?”
Mike had to think about that, it had been September or October when they'd met - the first time he'd left the house as Michael. And it was springtime now in April. “Few months, why?” he replied.
“No reason, really it's just…”Here he started to fidget with the sleeve of his jacket and so Mike suggested they sit down. Once they were seated at a nearby table that had been drug over Mike sat sideways, one leg on either side of the bench as Joey sat the same way facing him and looking up into his eyes.
“What's up man?” He asked, knowing Joey was the more sensitive sort.
After chewing his lip for a moment he finally spoke. “It's nothing really I just…”
And then instead of words he leaned in and kissed Mike full on the mouth in a rather passionate kiss. Mike’s first instinct was to pull away, but something about the kiss spurred him on and he found himself actually leaning into it. His hands finding Joey’s and his fingers hooking onto his. Finally they broke apart and Mike, usually the first one with words, was left dumbfounded.
“I just… I know how much you like Becky, but I had to do that just… just once. I like you Mike, have for a whi-” Then his words were cut off as Mike put a finger to his lips and leaned in once more to kiss him, his lips still tingling. It was a kiss unlike anything he'd ever had with Hannah, or dreamt about having with Rebecca. Joey’s lips were surprisingly soft and even sensual as the kiss deepened and Mike found his fingers in Joey’s hair. After a few moments they broke apart again, panting slightly as they stared into each other's eyes.
“Wow, just wow … that was… how long?” Mike stammered over his words as he sat there stunned. Joey slid closer so that their knees touched and slipped his fingers between Michael's. “Pretty much since that day you taught me Trig.”
Mike’s eyes widened slightly as he ran a hand through his hair, “Why didn’t you say something earlier?” It was Joey’s turn to run a hand through his hair, his fingers disappearing from Mike’s hand. “It just felt… too soon, you know? I mean we had only just met and all.”
Mike nodded and a sudden thought struck him, he wasn’t sure how he felt about all of this, or what his parents would say if he told them he liked another guy. “Hey Joey?”
“Hmm?”
“It’s not that I’m like embarrassed by this, or you or anything but… do you think we could keep this a secret for now?” He bit his lip nervously as he watched Joey through his eyelashes. In response, Joey leaned forward and kissed him softly and quickly again before pulling back with a smile. “Baby, whatever you want. I’m just glad you didn’t run away from me in terror just now.”
Mike chuckled, rumpling his hair up again, “I will admit for about a heartbeat it was my gut reaction but… then I realized that I do like you … that way. So, our little secret? Even from Becks? For now?”
Joey nodded, “Yeah, sounds fair to me. Of course, it’ll be harder to hide it from her than the rest of the world, but we can do that.” With that the duo set off across the field, hand in hand for a time until they got closer to the exit where they dropped their hands and headed off towards the diner to meet Rebecca.
*
“What took you two so long?” Rebecca asked as both guy sat down on either side of her and her third milkshake.
“Nothin’ just guy stuff.” Mike answered, his lips still tingling from the kiss with Joey.
“Uh huh…” she looked between them and rolled her eyes as she shrugged her shoulders, “whatever then.”
The waitress approached them after she was certain they were done with their conversation. “Michael, Joey. What’ll ya have this evening?”
Mike quickly picked up a menu, scanned it and replied, “Just a strawberry milkshake tonight I think, Glenda, thanks.” Glenda looked over at Joey who had also picked up a menu and was scanning it quickly and thoroughly. “And you Joseph?”
Joey winced at his full first name but set his menu down, “Strawberry milkshake and a plate of fries and gravy to share.” He replied with a subtle glance across at Mike that Glenda was oblivious to and Rebecca missed as she downed the rest of her milkshake.
“Another, Rebecca?” Glenda asked as she set the glass down with a slight tinkling sound. After swallowing Rebecca shook her head, “I better-” here she let out a small burp, “-not. Oh, excuse me.” Glenda, looking totally affronted by the belch regardless of the apology walked away to report the order of fries in and make the two milkshakes.
There was an awkward silence for a few minutes before Mike finally broke the tension, “So, Becky finally beat me in the 400 meter.” He grinned cockily at her as Glenda came by and dropped of their milkshakes. “Don’t you finally me, I’ll finally you right back. Ass,” she glared at him as he sipped at his milkshake. “Never. You know you love me,” he grinned again, knowing she knew he meant in a friend sort of way. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wouldn’t date you and I feel sorry for whoever does but yeah.”
Joey shrugged, “he’s not so bad Beck’s and you know it.”
Becky looked between the two of them for a moment then decided to let them keep their secret, not to mention she couldn’t be certain. “So, Mike - three whole months from 18. What do you want to do since we can’t even drink?”
Mike thought about what his parents as Jacob would want to do for it before answering, “I think I have a family thing with my aunt and uncle and Jacob. Pretty sure my weekend is free though.”
“Well, let us know, hey? I mean it is like three months away and all,” Rebecca replied. Mike nodded before looking at his watch and realizing he had an exam the next day. “Shit! I just remembered I have a test tomorrow, I should get going.”
As he slid off of his seat he noticed Joey looking awkward, like he wanted to leave to but didn't wanna be obvious. That's when Rebecca chimed in, oblivious as she ate a few French fries and gravy, “Hey Joey, don't you have an English Lit test tomorrow?”
Joey’s eyes seemed to brighten up but his words were darker, “Shit-ake mushrooms you’re right Becky. I should get going, I'll walk with ya if you want, Mike.” Mike nodded nonchalantly, “Sure, why not.” Once he was sure no one was looking he gave Mike a small smile which he returned slightly.
“Alright, let's get going then. See ya, Becks.”
Rebecca waved over her shoulder as both boys tossed some cash on the counter for their shakes and the fries and moved to walk out the door. It was a relatively short walk to Mikes’ house, although he still had to secretly change back into Jacob. So, when he saw that the house was still darkened he was secretly happy.
Once they were at the door Mike turned and leaned on the railing. “So, that was interesting today.” He couldn't help but chuckle as he also played his fingers into Joey’s.
Joey smiled and intertwined his fingers with Mike’s in return, “Yeah, I hope I didn't scare you of-” He began before Mike leaned in to kiss him again. The kiss lasted a minute or so before the two of them broke apart. “-o..off. Well, I guess not then?” He smiled at Mike.
“Ha ha never, Joe, never. Night then.”
“Night.”
From there, Michael walked inside the house and Joey retreated back down the sidewalk, pausing long enough to gaze longingly at the door before setting out for home. Inside, Michael had stopped in one of the interior hallways and had his eyes closed as he focused on forcing all of the extra power making him so much taller and larger inside of him. After so many months it was something that he had mastered and soon enough he s
tood in the dark hallway as Jacob.
After casting a look over his shoulder he ascended the staircase and flopped, fully clothed, on his bed.
Chapter 11: Baby
Jacob
Home
When Jacob woke up the next morning he lay in bed awake, vaguely aware he’d fallen asleep in his clothes. He was thinking over everything that had happened the previous evening, his feelings for Rebecca hadn’t changed, but now they were mingled with his feelings for Joey. It was all a big mess to be perfectly honest.
Sighing, he rolled himself out of bed and did his best to put it all into the back of his mind as he mentally prepared for the Geography test he knew he was intellectually prepared for.
Fifteen minutes later he was thundering down the stairs into the kitchen where his parents waited.
“Well good morning, sleepy head.” His father greeted him, lowering his paper as Jacob sat down rubbing his eyes.
“Ugh, didn’t sleep as well as I should have, that’s all.” He yawned widely and poured himself some cereal from the box on the table.
“Well, how late did you get in last night?” Alan asked him, taking a sip of his coffee.
Jacob shrugged, “Early enough that you guys weren’t home when I got home but late enough not to be a total dweeb?”
His father rolled his eyes and took a sip of his coffee again, “I’m not sure why you teenagers care about being a “dweeb” or no. School is for learning and in my honest and humble opinion - dweeb’s are the ones learning.” Jacob shrugged as he continued eating his cereal, the feeling of Joey’s lips on his - Michael's still fresh in his mind. He still couldn’t believe he was attracted to both Joey and Rebecca.
As soon as Jacob had finished eating he got up to put his dishes in the sink and then after giving his mom a peck on the cheek when she tapped it he grabbed the lunch money his father held out and stuffed it in his jeans pocket. “Alright, See ya after school then. Bye-bye, mom and dad.”
And just like that he was out the door and on his way to catch the bus to school.
*
By the time he got to school, Jacob’s mind was whirling but he was, at the very least, more awake. Thankfully Geography was his first period class so he was able to get through his exam before his thoughts pushed all of the studying out of his brain.
As he was walking out of Geography class, feeling good about his exam, he happened to see both Joey and Rebecca passing in the hallway. They, of course, both ignored him not knowing who his alter ego was - and Jacob knew this but after the events of the previous day he couldn’t help but feel a little put out at being ignored completely.
All he wanted to do was grab either of them - or both of them - and push them up against the wall and kiss them. He must have stopped dead in the hallway because all of a sudden he was being buffeted along by those larger than him and he was shaken back to reality; watching Rebecca and Joey’s departing backs.
Jacob went through the rest of the day, trying to put his two secret friends out of his mind but he couldn’t. He needed to see them - or at least one of them.
And so, as soon as the bell released them for the day he was out of the doors in a flash, tearing along towards the track where he knew Rebecca would be going to run. He also knew Joey would either come to wait for her, or would head to the diner as per usual.
Once he was in the shade of the tree, a picnic table nearby, he focused on lifting the heavy, concrete table off of the ground. This effort, as usual, triggered the change in his physical form and he became Michael once more. He had begun to feel very comfortable becoming Michael - sometimes wishing he could stay this way. After tugging off the uniform jacket with the school patch he headed into the track.

Track
As he wandered onto the track he spotted Rebecca already running laps in the distance and after a quick scan, spotted Joey sitting alone on a far picnic table waiting for her to finish. Sneaking around behind him, he snuck up on the table and vaulted half way over it to sit beside Joey.
“Boo!” He exclaimed as he landed, causing Joey to jump out of his skin for a moment before realizing who it was. After he had caught his breath, Joey punched him in the arm before snuggling up close to him. “Mike, you’re an ass sometimes, you know that?”
After a quick glance around, Mike slid an arm around Joey’s back and leaned his head against his, “I know. But hey, that’s me. Right?” Joey lifted his head to study Mike’s face before leaning in to kiss him quickly again. After breaking the kiss he nodded, “Yeah, I suppose it is and…” He paused biting his lip for a moment as if thinking something over.
Michael, confused, used a finger to lift his chin so he could look into his startlingly green eyes. “What is it, baby? What’s wrong?” He was momentarily stunned by what he had just called Joey, but he also found that he really didn’t care, it felt right.
Joey smiled at the pet name and slid a hand up to stroke Mike’s jaw line, after a moment he spoke. “Would it be weird if I told you that I loved you… already?”
Mike thought about the question for a moment, and he was right - it was rather early for such words and yet… it didn’t feel like it. They had known each other for months and he had always had this weird twinge of attraction for Joey in the same way he had for Rebecca.
“You know what? No, I don’t think it is, Joe. I really don’t.” Joey seemed to brighten right up and immediately brought his lips up to Mike’s and started to kiss him passionately again. Even more passionately than the other day when he had told him how he felt.
In between kisses, and panting slightly, he gasped, “Does. This… mean..” More kissing, “Are we.. a thing?”
“I really don’t know, and I don’t care at the moment.” Joey replied.
They were just sinking into the kiss, deeper than Michael had ever thought he would go with a guy in particular when suddenly they heard a soft, “heh-hem” from in front of them causing them to break apart and look up to see Rebecca staring down at them.
Wiping at his mouth Mike grinned sheepishly, “Hey Beck’s, good run?” He ran a hand through his hair as he grinned up at her.
“Oh, it was great. So I take it he finally told you, eh? Does this mean you’ll stop trying to flirt with me?”
Mike grinned mischievously and yanked her down on his lap to a small yelp. “Darlin’, never. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think I love the both of ya - and beyond just as friends.”
Rebecca regarded the two of them for a moment and then, after months of saying she just wasn’t into him that way, she suddenly leaned down and kissed him deeply for several very long seconds. As she did Mike’s hands, as he was in shock, fell to his sides - one twitching towards Joey’s as it brushed against it.
When she broke the kiss and leaned back with a soft smile Michael and Joey just stared at her dumbfounded. After a few seconds she rolled her eyes and shook her head before leaning forwards to briefly kiss Joey too. When she had sat back up right, moistening her lips, regarding each boy fondly.
“Well, that was different.” Joey replied, still in shock and loosely holding Mike’s hand. “It was, wasn’t it?” Rebecca replied, “and yet… both kisses felt so right to me. Mike nodded, finally able to find his words, “Well then...that was a surprise. So, what does this mean… for all of us.?”
Rebecca slid an arm around Mike as she thought about the question, however, it was Joey who broke in in a soft voice. “It isn’t totally out of the realm of normal for three people to be in a relationship or set of relationship at the same time? It’s not even that old fashioned.”
Mike and Rebecca regarded him with confusion etched on their faces, so he sighed and launched into an explanation. “It’s called polyamory. I have always liked you as more than a friend Rebecca, really… and then when we met Mike… I had this sort of-”
He rubbed his thumb over Mike’s hand and gave him a small smile, “-instant attraction to you. I spe
nt weeks trying to figure out who I li- loved more and couldn’t. You were both equal in my heart and so I set about researching it in study hall. That’s when I came across the terms “Poly amorous” and “Polyamory”. Polyamory is ‘the ability to have more than one sexual, and/or romantic relationship at one time. It’s where everybody in the relationship knows about all involved. After doing a bunch of research I realized this is the sort of person I am and from what you just said Mike… I think you are too.”
Mike’s eyebrows knitted together as he listened to Joey recite the definition as if reading from a dictionary. Then he looked up at Rebecca, regarding her and how he felt about her then over to Joey with whom he was still holding hands. “So, that’s why I- my heart can’t decide whom I love more? I love you both- equally?”
Joey nodded, “As far as I understand, yes. It’s how I feel when I look at both of you anyways.”
Rebecca had been silent throughout all of this but shifted slightly on her perch on Mike’s lap.
“What’s up. Ba- Becky?” Mike asked correcting himself midway through the word ‘babe’.
She leaned into him, heavily, for a moment before speaking in a soft voice. “So, what do we do now? I mean… if we’re gonna try this poly amorous thing…”
Joey shrugged, “I guess we just keep going on the way we have - we just set time aside for each of us to spend time with another alone.”
As Joey explained this, Mike was getting a little nervous - his life, complicated as it was already, was about to get that much more complicated. He couldn’t bring himself to tell his secret though, not yet. Instead he simply nodded before leaning backwards to rest against the picnic table, elbows resting on its top.
“So, shall we go with the flow then? I mean, homeschooled or not I am still in my senior year as well so I also have exams coming up soon.”
Rebecca nodded, agreeing, “Yeah, I’d say so.”
Mike half raised his hand off the table, “Well, I would like to take each of you out on a date sometime soon. So, who is free this weekend?” Both of them pulled out their phones to consult their schedules and Joey moaned, “Dammit, I have a Robotics competition this weekend - I’ll be out of town.” He pouted visibly as Rebecca giggled.
