“What are you doing here, Sebastian?”

“I came to see you.” I was nervous. My hands shook so I placed both of them behind my back. I glanced up at her and then I took off the hood to my clock and resumed the position of my hands. I didn’t want her to be intimidated. But I couldn’t stand not being near her so I stepped close to her, and she stepped back.

“Have I changed so much that you would be fearful of me?” I said.

“I thought I knew you, Sebastian?” I raised an eyebrow. Of course she knew me. I hadn’t changed that much. I was still the one who loved her all those years and cared for her and tried to protect her.

Trying to control my urge not to tell her that I had seen her in Seattle, I took a long breath, but I couldn’t control my urge to say, “I thought I knew you.” She bristled at my words.

“What do you mean and no one truly knows anyone. If someone had said that I would witness the barbaric display I saw you participate in, I would have bet my life that you wouldn’t do something as sickening, but then I would have lost my life wouldn’t I?” She said to me. Her eyes bearing down on me. Making me feel small and insignificant.

“I just came to tell you good-bye and that I wish you happiness with whomever you choose to be with. I won’t stand in your way and I will see that Samantha leaves you alone. She will if I promise her my devotion and loyalty.”

“I can’t ask you to do that,” she said. Her voice soft as I remember. We stood staring at each other not wanting to take a step to meet. I heard her heart beat. I heard her breath hitch.

The thumping of her heart gaining strength and momentum and becoming a wild defining boom only I could hear. Her breathing intense, she opened her mouth and a low whimper revealed her true feelings.

Reaching for her I said, “How can I let you go?” She looked into my eyes and there was an almost encouraging spark coming from her eyes. Her body so warm, I couldn’t resist kissing her neck. With her soft breast on my chest, the throbbing of her heart pumping the blood through her body seduced me, and that feeling I could lose her, made me frantic.

She wore no bra underneath that dress. I couldn’t help thinking how someone else had been so close to her. With one hand I ripped her panties from her body and she stood naked in front of me. Her body beautiful and youthful.

I reached and brought her up into my arms. Looking down on her, she said, “Now what Sebastian. We can’t keep doing this. How can we say good bye to each other? You and I know this isn’t good for us. What can we hope to ever be to each other? I am a human and you are...”

  “Soul-less.”

“That’s not what I wanted to say,” she said to me as I leaned over her wanting to feel her mortal soul join with mine.

“I need you now before I say good bye to you forever.” I took off my shirt and she passed her hand over my chest. My heart bled for her touch. My body begged for her one more time. When I had taken everything off, I lay over her.

Zoey leaned up to kiss me. Her eyes brimming with eagerness, but gentle and passionate. She held on to my arms and the heat she radiated burnt through me. She had ignited that fire in me that no one could. How can I walk away from her, I thought.

Not in a hundred or thousand years will I be able to capture a love like hers again, and my heart broke.

My desperate passion made me eager. But I wanted my last sexual experience with her to be my best. I could never hope to have this again. My existence would be without love and full with hate. I would need to feel this to keep my soul. If just for now.

  Chapter Fourteen-Zoey

It was sheer happiness when I saw Sebastian standing in my room. The natural reaction was, what are you doing here? I didn’t dare say that for fear he would disappear and I would be standing mournful and left alone with my regrets. But I knew. I felt it too. I had a feeling it would be our last night together, and I had to be in his arms. I had to feel his cold body to cool the incessant heat that plagued me for so long.

As usual we could never be together without our disagreements. Behind my snarky words, and his sour look, smoldered the passion and intensity of two sexually charged lovers.

I watched at him as he placed his lips on mine. He looked into my eyes as I raked my fingers up and down his chest as he gave me all the reasons why we shouldn’t be together. He knew all the reasons and I knew but one—it would be impossible to live with a vampire. A vampire who is hunted by a witch and a brother who is bent on destroying both of us.

A vampire who is woke at night while I’m sleeping, but then what is the difference in that with being with a mortal being? I rationalized. Now he has me thinking like him. What the fuck?

Before I talk him out of not leaving me, he would have to promise me that he would never drink another’s blood except mine. How I would convince him of that I didn’t know.

“You can keep coming here and putting both of us at risk.”

“When you are with me you can never be at risk for anything but me loving you.” I smiled at that. His voice easy and convincing. “I need more.”

Wrapping me in his arms, he flipped me over and let me lie on his chest. I looked into his joyful eyes. “You’ve changed. You’re smiling. Why are you smiling?” I asked.

“Because I’ve finally made up my mind about you. I’ve always been in turmoil and confused by my love for you. I decided to truly love someone, you have to let them be them-selves, and you have to let them go. Release them into the wild as you would a beautiful wild creature,” he said. His voice resigned and his eyes gave off silent pain.

“So I’m a wild creature,” I said kissing him. I placed my tongue in his mouth and gave him my best French kiss. Our tongues hot and cold entwined and mingled and the power of that kiss sent passion through us and we raised our bodies to meet. I felt his manhood pulsating yearning for me and my heated nipples touched his hard cold chest.

Sebastian smiled at the notion of my nipples moving and extending as he felt them on his torso. He glanced up at me and in a second turned me on my back and he was looking at me with a deep penetrating desire.

“What do you want from me, Zoey?” he asked and I smiled.

“You know what I want. I need you to change me to be with you. I know now what I want, and that’s to never be away from you. To be with you forever.” His face turned and that displeased sour look took the place of a wide smile. I placed my fingers to the corner of his mouth and tried to make an indentation upward to make his mouth look like a smile.

He raised an eyebrow. His face more handsome than I could imagine. He did smile and showed his brilliant white teeth. Then he stared down at me.

“What do you see?” he asked. As I looked into his eyes they became cold, and the bluish eyes changed to red. That beautiful soul became a cold frightening erotic personality. One I had never seen before.

“Stop. Stop. You are frightening me.” But he didn’t stop. He kissed my nipples and at first it was a tender kiss, but then it became hard and I couldn’t stop him from sucking them until they were blood red.

I hit him and bit him but he continued his ravage of my body as if he couldn’t control himself. He whispered into my ears, “Is this what you want?” I didn’t say anything and he continued by taking my hands and opening my legs.

“You don’t have to be so coarse, I will give you what you want.”

“Maybe this is what I want. Maybe this is me,” he said as he placed his hard penis into my soft opening, but when I screamed for him to stop but he didn’t.

“Sebastian. I didn’t want you like this.” I bit at his shoulder but he became more determined. I didn’t recognize him with his eyes flashing and looking outward away from my face. Then for some reason he stopped his cruel attack.

“Is this what you want?” He said looking into my frantic panic eyes.

“But that’s not you,” I screamed.

“It could be me. I had promised you once that I wouldn’t take another human’s blood. Hell I promised
myself.” I glanced at him because I didn’t know he swore. Maybe there were so many things about him that I didn’t know. Do we ever know anyone?

“This is what you have to look forward to from me. And it would have been far worse if you had married that hideous brother of mine.”

I wrapped my arms around his shivering body as he pulled out and I said to him, “I’m willing to take my chances.” But was I really? For some reason Ryan came to mind. I had never visualized anyone being with me other than Sebastian. Even as a young girl he was all I wanted. I couldn’t imagined that there was anyone more handsome or more loving than Sebastian.

I wished he had let me keep my memories of him, but I guess he had a reason.

The next hour I spent lying in his arms and him explaining to me that he was testing me. He smiled and we laughed and I thought we had a chance together.

When I woke daylight was coming because the birds were gathering and singing below the window. He sat up as if he had been hit by lightning.

“Zoey, I have to do something. Don’t go out until I return.”

  “When will that be?”

  “Tonight.”

“Will you promise that you will return and take me away? And don’t forget about Terry.”

“I won’t. But don’t leave the house until I return.” I had to promise him but then I remembered I had a date tomorrow night. There was nothing more important than being with Sebastian. And so I waited.

  Chapter Fifteen-Zoey

I woke from what I thought was a dream, but my body had the sensations of Sebastian making love to me. I felt tired and sore. I pushed the sheets back and tried to stand, but I couldn’t. I became frantic. I called out to Terry.

“She came running into the room as if I was dying. I had alarmed her with my panicky voice. Then as Terry entered the room, Robbie and Ann rushed through the door to me. They looked equally concerned.

“What’s wrong, Zoey?” Robbie said. “I smell a vampire and a witch,” he said sniffing around.

“A witch? How could one get in here?” Terry questioned. “I was in the next room and I didn’t hear a thing.”

“You didn’t hear or see Sebastian visit Zoey, but I did,” Robbie said looking at Terry and then to me. “You are useless, Terry. You lead a detective to my door, and then you let a witch get past you.”

“Why didn’t you sniff out that witch?” Terry said in defiance to Robbie painting her as useless.

“Because my senses are tuned to vampires, and vampires such as you are, have instincts to know when witches are near.” Terry breathed loud and placed her hands on her hips.

“What’s going on?” I asked Robbie my eyes darting back and forth. The way I was feeling, light headed and paralyzed from my shoulders down, I didn’t have time for Robbie and Terry to fight and play the blame game.

“It means that she probably gave you something as you slept. It’s probably a powerful poison. The poison she gave you works slowly. First your legs and then it will eventually paralyze your entire body and leave you awake and speaking when she tortures you. Do you know anyone who would do that and especially with Sebastian nearby?” Of course I knew.

“Samantha,” Terry and I said as a chorus. “She has been trying to kill me from the day I learned about Sebastian and the day she realized that we were in love.”

“Never mind the history, is there anything that can be done?” Ann said looking up at Robbie. “You know all kinds of shifters and humans, do you know any witches, Robbie?”

“One,” he said. “She may be willing to help us. I’ll have go now. It will take some time to locate her. But hopefully I’ll get back before tonight. You have only a few hours.”

“Then why are you talking honey. Go.” And Ann pushed Robbie out of the room. She knew how to handle her big bad wolf.

When she came back she said with a quivering smile, “He is all bark and no bite. He has a soft side for women and a hard side for the male of the species. Raised by a single mother,” she said to me hoping to comfort me.

“If all else fail, I can have Sebastian change me,” I said looking scared and a little helpless. But I didn’t know where he had gone to.

“You sure you want that?” Ann asked.

“Will I have a choice? Sebastian said he would be back tonight. I have until sundown don’t I?” I looked to Terry for an answer.

“I don’t know, Zoey. All this shit is new to me. I’m learning like you, and this shit with vampires, shifters, witches has a high learning curve. I’ll let you know in a few hundred years.”

“I’m not sure I will be with you,” Terry. Terry sat on the side of the bed and held my hand. I couldn’t feel anything. Maybe I didn’t have until sundown.

“Where is that cat you brought me?” I needed anything to distract me from thinking.

“I have a confession. The cat isn’t a cat. Well not a domestic cat, but it’s a cat in the broadest sense of the word. It’s a Bobcat.” I blinked my eyes at her. It appeared my eyes and sense of speech were the only things working. “You know how much I love cats. You do too don’t you, Zoey?”

She had this pathetic sincere look on her now gorgeous face. I had never seen her look so beautiful and so vulnerable. Although becoming a vampire agreed with her, I didn’t think she was ready for this phase of her life. Who is ready to die and then become immortal, I questioned.

“Where did you find that Bobcat?” Ann questioned.

“At the zoo. Do you think I could take a kitten from its mother? Not without consequences. But then that’s another story. The mother was starving and she didn’t have enough milk for him. He was the runt of the litter. You know how I’m a sucker for the poor throwaways. You remember the cats I brought home, Zoey.”

“Yes, I remember. And where are they now that they don’t have you and me to feed them. Probably roaming around and eating mice or a cute little bird.”

“I couldn’t resist him when he looked into my eyes, I knew it was love,” Terry said.

She had great sympathy for animals, and that’s why it was so hard for her to feed on them. There wasn’t in love lost for humans with her and that’s why she wasn’t fazed by draining them of their blood.

“A Bobcat. Terry I can’t believe this. It will kill all the small animals in the forest around here. Robbie stocked the woodlands with deer and it will kill the young ones, and fish, and rabbits. Robbie had his stream stocked with fish so he didn’t have to go hunting around for food. And the birds, all the beautiful birds on the property will be his prey. Just wait until Robbie finds out,” Ann said. A whoosh of air flowed through her teeth.

“I give up, Terry. I have to get Zoey something to eat to counteract the poison.” Ann turned looking in the direction of the bathroom. Then she rushed inside and came out with a glass of water.

  “What’s that?” Terry asked.

“Salt water,” Ann said putting it to my mouth. “Drink it. “My mother said it works on poison.” I did as she said and drank it all. I was willing to try anything.

“But I’m not sure anything will work. Maybe it will slow it down until Robbie returns with that witch. Even if he finds her she might refuse to come here.”

“Why would she do that?” Terry asked.

“Because they once had a thing,” Ann said looking to Terry.

“How can a werewolf and a witch have a thing?” Terry asked with a small laugh.

“The same way a vampire and a human and a werewolf and a human,” Ann said upset at the question. “I’m going, Zoey. Terry should be able to watch you until I get back.”

“Of course I can,” Terry said as if she took offense with what had been said about her. “You won’t tell Sebastian I was asleep on the job will you?” She said to Ann. Ann said nothing but turned and walked out before shaking her head at Terry.

“Why didn’t you hear her come in? Sebastian had been here most of the night, she must have come in when he left. How would she have gotten in?” I asked Terry.<

Terry stood and walked to the window and looked out. There was a gap small enough for something to enter.

“That window. She must have come in through the window,” Terry said closing it and securing and testing the lock by opening and closing it. She peered through the window. “I can’t see anything for all these branches. Only a bird could have flown in here,” Terry said. “I can’t see a witch climbing that tree and getting in here.”

“They don’t climb trees, Terry. They move around as animals, and if their magic is strong enough, they transport themselves around invisible to me and you,” I said. I had read up on witches before I thought they existed.

And then I remembered the beautiful bird that had come to my window before, and then Samantha would show up. It then came to me yet still I refused to believe it.

“She must have transformed herself into a bird.”

Terry checked the locks again and fastened the locks on all the windows. “Now let her try to come in now. And I’m sleeping in here with you. She wouldn’t dare face me.” I wasn’t sure Terry was correct. Maybe she had a false sense of her new found powers, which could be good and bad.

My phone rang. No one calls anymore. I motioned for Terry to bring my purse and I promptly retrieved the phone.

At first I didn’t want to answer. But Aare and Samantha wouldn’t call on the phone, they didn’t have to. But now Samantha had found me. How did she find me that fast?

After retrieving the phone for me, Terry hit the speaker.

“Zoey. This is Ryan. I couldn’t help but thinking about you. I couldn’t wait to hear your voice. I can’t wait until tomorrow. It’s strange. Something has happened to me and it’s a good thing. I’m in love for the first time in my life.”

“Ryan, why are you telling me this?” I said as Terry frowned at me.

“Because I thought you should be the first to know,” he said.

  “Who is this girl?”

“You.” His voice light and sincere rang true with that one word, and I got sick because I didn’t see him that way. I saw him as a father figure. I had to get out of the date.
