I swallow the lump in my throat that has formed while Megan was talking. I guess I knew all along that she killed her husband because of Donovan, but to hear it from his own sister’s mouth is surreal. “You don’t think she did it for the money?”
“Oh, I’m pretty sure the money had a lot to do with it, but not as much as my brother did. He was also a victim in this case. Yeah, he may have slept with a married woman, but he would never wish anyone to die, especially because of him,” Megan’s voice drops to a whisper at the end of her statement.
Maybe I shouldn’t push the subject anymore. I realize how touchy it is, and I don’t want to upset anyone. But I can’t help but to ask one more question. “Did you ever meet her?”
She stops dead in her tracks. “Only once, and that was enough. She stopped by my brother’s place one time when I was in town to visit him. He asked me to answer the door and when I did, that whore was standing there, looking like she wanted to kill me.” She runs her hand through her dark hair and closes her eyes. “She didn’t know I was his sister. She came at me and wrapped her hands around my throat. I thought the bitch was going to kill me. Thank God Donovan was just in the next room. He had to tear her off of me.” Her eyes open, the blue clouded with anxiety. “She started to punch him in his face, repeatedly. He had to scream at her that I was his family to get her to stop.”
Oh. My. God. She is crazy. No wonder Donovan stayed with her as long as he did. He must have been terrified of what she was capable of. I guess I can’t blame him; I’d be scared out of my mind, too. I decide I should move onto something else other than Claire. “So, how long have you and Adam been dating?”
Megan perks right up and her smile almost reaches her eyes. “Almost a year. He’s so awesome. He’s in a rock band at his school in Macon; the Possession.”
I stay quiet the rest of the walk down to the “bridal bathroom”, letting her go on and on about Adam and how wonderful he is. I don’t mean to be rude, but I can only think about Donovan and Claire. What a nightmare she must have been. I just pretend to listen and nod my head and say, “Oh, that’s nice.” Geez, where the hell is this bathroom at?
We finally get there and when Megan opens the door, I have to pick my jaw off the floor. It looks like a spa, complete with a jacuzzi style bathtub, a huge Victorian era vanity, and even a walk in closet. “Wow,” I whisper to myself as I walk further in, looking at the bridesmaids dresses hanging up and the shoes sitting out. The bride’s dress is hard to miss, with it’s fifteen foot long train, jeweled bodice and sheer white satin material. “I can see no expense was spared, huh?” I turn to look at her as she places her dress with the others. All the gowns are the exact same; pale pink, strapless and floor length.
“Ha, yeah,” she snorts “That’s Gabriel for you. Did you know that him and my brother were close in high school?”
“Donovan told me that. He said he was the popular one in the group,” I run my hand over the soft fabric of the wedding dress.
“Yeah, he was. There was four of them that hung out all the time at his boarding school. Gabe was one and Daniel is another, but I don’t remember the other guy’s name. All I know is that none of the guys speak to him anymore,” she shrugs. “Guess he was the asshole of the group.”
I nod, still admiring the handiwork of whoever made this exquisite dress. My mind wanders to my daddy, and I frown. I stop myself but I get upset about him not ever giving me away. “This is really a lovely bathroom. I wish I had one,” I say, trying to distract myself from my thoughts.
Megan laughs. “Yeah, but I feel bad for the cleaning lady after weddings.”
“Well, I’m going to go back up to the room now. My body is starting to realize it’s the middle of the night.” I yawn and stretch my arms over my head. “Don’t wanna be tired for the wedding. Oh, by the way, what time is it? I didn’t even think to ask your brother.”
“At three. Thank God we have tents. It’s going to be blazing by this afternoon.”
Great, more of that lovely Georgia humidity to ruin my hair. “Okay, I’ll see you later.” I give her a small wave and start the journey back to Donovan’s room. I just hope I don’t pass Donna. It’s way too early to open a can of whoop ass on her. With that thought in my head now, I start to almost jog up the stairs. That really is the last thing I need right now, and I really don’t want my temper to get the best of me. Some may call it a temper; I call it a swift reaction to bullshit. It’s all in how you see it.
I make the mile hike back to the room without seeing another person and I quietly open the door. I don’t want to wake Donovan if he’s still sleeping. I peek in and see him with his arms under the pillow, his blue eyes closed. I shut the door and lock it, just in case. I slip off my yoga pants and my top, leaving me only in my underwear. I tiptoe to the bed, making sure that I slide under the covers smoothly. I watch him sleeping and wonder what he’s dreaming. He looks so peaceful and I can’t help but to touch him. I push a lock of dark brown hair out of his face and brush my fingers over his cheek. His eyes twitch, but don’t open. I feel so comfortable with him, like it’s where I’m supposed to be.
I snuggle in beside him and he wraps his arm around my waist. I gaze at him under my lashes and see his eyes flutter open. He yawns and sleepily says, “Good morning, baby doll.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” I frown slightly. I was enjoying watching his slumber.
“I’m not sorry,” he grins at me, that sexy sideways smile and I know what he wants. I feel it against my thigh.
“Hmm, I guess you’re not sorry, seeing that you’re very happy to see me,” I purr, pressing my body against his. He grabs the back of my knee and hoists my leg up, so I feel his bulging erection against my panties.
“Let’s lose this, shall we?” he growls, unsnapping my bra with one hand. The straps slip down my shoulders, exposing just the tops of my breasts. Donovan pulls it the rest of the way off, then works on removing my panties. I take my turn and remove his boxers. We are wrapped in each others arms, our bare skin touching. Desire courses through my veins and I can’t wait for him to bring me to the brink of ecstasy.
He gently rolls me to my back, then props himself on his elbow to gaze down at me. “I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of seeing you like this,” he whispers, his fingers skim over my belly. I bite my lip, trying to hold back my moan. He bends his head down and starts to press his lips against my skin, starting at my neck. His mouth moves down my body with each kiss, making me squirm and grip the sheets. He spends a little extra time on my breasts, taking my nipples into his mouth and softly nipping them. His breath is hot against my flesh, making me feel like I’m on fire.
Donovan moves from being beside me to on top, still making a searing path of kisses down my belly. His tongue dips into my navel, but doesn’t stay long. He reaches the apex of my thighs. He grips each thigh with his hands and pulls my legs further apart. My body shivers as his tongue rims the outside of my folds. My back arches off the bed when he sucks on my aching clitoris. Damn, what this man can do with his mouth alone is astonishing. Then he blows a little down there, making me buck up.
“Oh, wow! That was new,” I say, breathless from all the panting I’m doing.
“Baby, you ain’t seen nothing yet.” His blue eyes look up at me and I almost lose it. He licks me like he would an ice cream cone, from the bottom to the top. I’m just about to climax when he stops.
“What? Why did you stop?” I whine. God, I was so close, too.
He moves from between my legs and lies beside me. “I want you to ride me.”
I gladly comply with his demand and sit up. I straddle him and reach for his shaft. He’s so hard and soft at the same time. I position myself just over top and slide down, but just a little. He teased me, now I’m going to tease him. I sink myself about halfway down, then pull back up. I repeat the process; only giving myself to him a little at a time. I keep one hand on his shaft and use the other to support myself on h
is abdomen.
“Oh, I see this is my payback.” His lips curl into a mischievous grin. I return it with a smirk of my own.
“Two can play at this game.” I sink down just a bit more, watching my man close his eyes and bite his lip. I love when he comes undone because of me. It makes me want to give in, but I think I’ll play some more. This time, I pull all the way off of him, with my hand still on his shaft, and use his tip to rub myself. I circle all the way around so just his head feels my wet folds. I know this drives him crazy.
“Jesus!” he groans, his head tipping back. His hands latch onto my hips, his body begging me to let him have me. Since I can no longer stand not having him fill me, I release his dick and slide all the way down. His hips buck up and he cries out. He holds me in place for a few seconds, my body stretching and molding to his length. I lean back and grab his thighs. He goes deeper this way, so I start to move my body up and down. Slowly at first, then my pace quickens. I feel my muscles clench tight and my orgasm rips through me.
When the final shiver rolls through me, Donovan sits up and wraps his arms around my back. He buries his face into my neck, pushes my body back down on his shaft, and lets himself go. I feel him throb and pulsate inside me. We both still, our breathing and heartbeats trying to slow down. He holds me tight against him, like he doesn’t want to let me go. Something about it feels... different. It almost feels like he’s hugging me for the last time. I have no idea why it feels the way it does; it just does. I won’t complain about it; I love when he holds me. When I’m wrapped up in his arms, I feel so safe, so protected, so...in love.
Chapter 10
Donovan
I won’t -no, can’t- let her go. My life finally feels like it could be complete. I have the job I’ve always wanted, the girl I never knew I needed, and a family that is nothing short of amazing. Only thing is, none of it matters if I lose Allie. She’s the one that calmed my wild ways. She always listens to me about everything; work, family problems, absolutely everything. Yet, I’m too much of a pussy to break down and tell her about my past. I try to push all of it out of my mind and concentrate on my girl.
I keep my arms around her, holding her as close as I can to me. I want to be able to look back at moments like these and smile. I want to tell her so bad how much I love her, but it’s not fair to her if I can’t tell her everything.
“Are you okay?” She pulls back, cups my face in her hands, and stare back at me with those beautiful green eyes.
I put on my best poker face and say, “Oh, absolutely. I’m perfect, as long as you’re here with me.” There, that should at least let her know just a fraction of how I feel. I rub my nose across her cheek, inhaling her scent. She smells like my Allie; sunflowers, but with a little bit of sex mixed in. The two shouldn’t go together, but on her, they do. I’ve never smelled anything more delicious in my life.
She slides off of me and lays on her side of the bed. “So, are you nervous?”
My heart stops. Nervous? “Why would I be nervous?” I feel my voice waver a bit, but I try to go for the confused look.
She laughs and it’s like a sweet melody in my ears. I love to hear that sound. “No, silly. I mean, are you nervous about being in front of a million people at the wedding?”
Oh. “Nah, I got this,” I say, giving her that sideways grin she likes so much. She cocks her head at me and gives me a dazzling, heart stopping smile. I want nothing more to lay her back down and make love to her again.
“You’re something else,” she giggles as she sits up. “I guess we both need to shower. What time do you have to go down to get ready?”
“Baby doll, guys don’t take long to put on a tux. Now, you girls on the other hand, take forever. They are all down there getting ready by now.”
“Yeah, I walked with Megan down to that huge bathroom. I mean, it looks like a day spa,” she says, standing up giving me a great view of her ass. I swat it playfully; I can’t resist. She yelps and grabs her backside. “Donovan!” I hold my hands up in defense. I start to get out of the bed, too.
“So, you two talked? What about?” I follow her to the bathroom, mainly to get an eyeful of her sexy ass body.
“Oh, not too much. Ya know, just girl stuff.” Uh, that was vague.
“Not much, huh? I know my sister and all she does is blab. So ‘not much’ and ‘talking’ cannot be in the same sentence as Megan,” I tell her as I turn the shower on to let the water warm.
“Well, if you must know, she told me a lot about Adam.”
That little shit gets on my last nerve. I can’t stand the way he looks at Megan, that he wants to devour her right there. Then he’s got the balls to check out Allie. God only knows what he does when she’s not around. “Oh, he’s a douchebag.”
“Megan seems to adore him,” she shrugs it off. “We also talked a little bit about...” Her voice trails and I pray to God it wasn’t about Claire.
“About what?” I ask, dreading the answer. I know it was about her. She can’t seem to get the answers out of me that she wants, so she probably asked Megan.
“She told me that Claire used to stalk you and that she even attacked Megan at your house.” Her eyes drop to the ground, like she’s ashamed.
“Well, yeah. That happened.” I’m the one who should be ashamed. I’m not worthy of her love until I get the guts to sit her down and talk.
“We don’t have to talk about it right now. I don’t want you to be upset today.” Her green eyes look back up to me. I swear this girl can see right through to my soul, and it fucking terrifies me. It’s like if she looks long enough, she will figure my secrets. It is a relief that she doesn’t want to press the issue right now. She always seems to put my feelings above her own, and she shouldn’t have to do that for me.
“Babe, I promise, we will talk about it. I just don’t want to do it while we’re here. I want it to be just you and me.” I lift her chin up to give her a light kiss on her sweet lips.
Chapter 11
Allie
After we finish washing, we decide to grab something to eat before the house turns into chaos. It’s still early, only half past eight, so I hope it’s just the two of us. Donovan said all the girls were getting ready. I had to laugh because he told me Gabe paid three hair stylists top dollar to come do everyone’s hair. He even offered for me, if I wanted to use them. I think I will, if they have the time. I would like to look good for my man and since my hair is crap in the humidity,
We make our way to the kitchen the family uses as opposed to the staff’s, since they are insanely busy catering the wedding this afternoon. Good, there’s no one else down here. Well, I don’t really mind anyone other than Donna.
“What do you want to eat, babe? In the mood for anything?” he asks as he peers into the fridge.
“Oh, how about something simple? I plan on pigging out at the reception.”
He lifts his head up to look at me and grins. “Yeah, so do I. How about yogurt and fruit? I think we have grits, too.”
“Ugh, I think I’ll take the yogurt and fruit, thank you. I’m not big on grits.”
“What? You don’t like grits? Are you crazy?” He looks at me like I’m nuts.
“Nope.”
“You don’t know what you’re missing, babe. You can have it your way. What kind of fruit do you want?” I walk over and pick up an apple and a cup of Greek yogurt. “Is that it? Will that hold you over until later?”
“Aww, you’re so cute when you’re concerned,” I tease, using my index finger to press on the tip of his nose. “Yes, this is just fine. Now, go make your nasty grits.” Donovan pulls me close, grabs my behind and plants a long, lingering kiss. My body molds into his as he bites my bottom lip gently. “You shouldn’t start something you can’t finish, babe.” He looks at me through hooded eyelids and shakes his head.
“I’d love to finish,” he squeezes my ass a little harder. “Just give me the chance. Because I’ll take you right here on this table and not think t
wice about it.”
I wish he would, but decide we should refrain from kitchen sex in his father’s house. I kiss him swiftly and tell him, “Later, I promise. Then you can have your way with me, any way you want.”
“Oh, baby doll, you shouldn’t have said that. But since you did, I fully intend to have my way with you the first chance I get.”
“Make my breakfast,” I playfully scold him and he raises his hands in defense.
“Yes, ma’am.”
We eat our breakfast at the small bar in the middle of the kitchen. I love when we have normal moments. I guess it seems trivial, but when you go through all the bullshit we have, then it’s times like this that mean the most. We talk about the wedding and my PA classes. I can’t believe I just have less than two months before I begin. Thank goodness I have Donovan to help me through this. He’s going to make a great study partner. Well, he will if we can actually study and not grope each other all the time.
