The onslaught of shooting began. We all retreated enough to use our motorcycles as shields. I, of course, had Everly crouched down next to my ride, keeping her safe.

I emptied my first clip and reloaded. Layne shot and hit one of the guys in the shoulder. He dropped his gun and fell off his motorcycle, screaming in pain. That didn’t diffuse a thing. They kept shooting. We kept shooting. A couple bullets came close to hitting us. They popped into the ground and trees and rocks on the side of the road. The buzz of the bullets went by me and I felt right at home again.

We managed to hit two more of the guys before the gunfire stopped.

The guy who had been talking to me put his hands out. He then put his weapon down and stepped from his motorcycle. He pointed to me and nodded.

“What you hiding there, boy?” he asked.

  “Something for me,” I said.

  “Pretty girl back there?”

  “Maybe.”

“Tell you what… give me her and I’ll let you and your boys ride through. No questions. No bullets. I’ll offer a little protection.”

I looked down at Everly. The words definitely got to her. She looked scared as hell. She shook her head. She thought I was going to give her up to these assholes.

“You are the one who needs protection,” I warned. “It’s been a long eighteen months. But everything changes right now. Get that through your fucking mind. I don’t play games. Whatever you think or you’ve heard, it’s bullshit. I’m here right now.”

“No, I want that piece of ass you’re hiding. Me and my guys could use a little fun tonight.”

“Not going to happen,” I said. “She’s all mine.”

I looked down at Everly. Damn, she was in such a good position right now. Too bad these guys had to fuck this up. I could have myself buried in her mouth right now.

“I’m not playing around,” the guy said. “At all. You get that?”

  “Neither am I,” I said.

“So how do we settle this?”

“Like honest men,” I said. I put my fists up and gave a nod.

I hadn’t had a really good fight in… oh, well, a day. But this would be the first fight outside of prison.

“Okay,” the guy said. “I knock your fucking teeth out and then I’m going to take that slut. Then my boys are going to send a clear message to the rest of you.”

I ignored the empty words. I crouched down and looked at Everly. I reached out and touched her face.

Just how in the good fucking hell of anything did this beautiful woman end up in the watch of Devil Call MC?

  6.

  (Everly)

He touched my face and it did as much as when he touched my leg. My body warmed over and I was wet. Damn me for being so sensitive and tender, but I couldn’t help it. I had tried to get Layne to touch me and he wouldn’t. I had fantasized about Talon here and there… and now the man was alive, out of prison, and staring at me.

The pictures did nothing compared to the real thing. Prison must have given him nothing better to do than pushups and chin-ups because he looked twice as big from the pictures I saw. It was like muscle cut itself on top of muscle.

“Look at me,” Talon said, his rough hand against my cheek.

  “I am,” I said.

“I’m going to fucking knock this guy out,” he said.

Ohmyfuckinggosh… it was so sexy to hear him say that. Mostly because I believed he would do just that. I’m not a woman of violence, but there was just something about a guy like Talon. Everything about him screamed bad boy and screamed wrong boy… but I couldn’t stop wanting him to be bad, to be wrong, and to pull me into the storm he called his life.

  “Okay,” I said.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen then. They should just back down and let us through. But they might pull their weapons again. If shit goes bad, you need to stay down and protect yourself. Got that?”

  “Okay. I will.”

“I can’t have that beautiful head of yours getting blown off.”

His fingers stroked my hair. I was sopping between my legs. My panties were pulling up tight, desperate to absorb all the desire leaking for Talon.

  “I’ll be fine,” I said.

“Yeah, sure thing. You don’t know who I am, babe. You don’t know what I’m going to do with this club. Don’t be fucking stupid about things.”

I nodded. I couldn’t speak to what Talon said.

He reached into his leather and took out his gun. He put it in my hand and nodded. “Know how to shoot that?”

“Pull the trigger?” I asked with a weak smile.

“Beautiful,” he said. “Just don’t hit any of the guys wearing a Devil Call MC patch.”

  “I’ll try.”

Talon shook his head. “Beautiful and trying to flirt with me. With these assholes ready to take you and do whatever they want. Maybe you do belong around here.”

My mind scrambled as Talon started to stand. I managed to say, “I’ll earn my keep. I promise.”

Talon was standing. I was level with his lower body. I was so tempted to drop the gun and grab his dick. Just take him out of his pants and welcome him out of prison the right way.

“I know you will, babe,” Talon said. “But right now, earn your way back to the clubhouse by not getting killed.”

Talon then took off his leather cut and put it on the seat of his motorcycle. Next came the t-shirt. The muscles rippled up and down his body. He had the same tattoos on his shoulders and nowhere else. His chest was large and cut, his stomach muscles flexing as he took breaths. A vein ran from each of his shoulders down through his biceps and split into his forearms and his hands. He made fists and the veins pulsed.

This guy was deadly. Deadly to those around him and definitely deadly to my heart.

I was fucked being near him.

I knew that and I wanted it. I wanted it all.

Talon stepped around from his motorcycle and opened his arms. He slowly turned around once, showing the other guy he had no weapons. The other put his gun on the ground and put up his fists. I looked over the motorcycle and just stared. This was so intense. Dangerous. Hot.

Talon walked right up to the guy and let him punch him. The punch knocked Talon back a few feet and he wiped the corner of his mouth. There was blood. Talon smiled. He moved at the guy again. The guy threw a fist and Talon dodged it. He then punched the guy in the stomach. The guy let out a scream and Talon had him by the hair. He kept the guy standing and then slammed his head against the guy’s face. That’s when Talon went wild. Punch after punch, Talon started to destroy the guy. Talon’s fists worked up and down the guy’s body with so many punches. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before. The guy finally fell to the ground. Talon put his fists down and I could see the blood on his fists.

“You done now?” Talon yelled. “You want to get the fuck back up and do it again?”

The guy’s face bled everywhere. He started to his feet and then moved suddenly as he jumped at Talon. His shoulder hit Talon in the legs. The move was awkward and it sent Talon stumbling back and down to his ass.

  “What the fuck?” Talon yelled.

The guy had a plan though. He moved toward his gun. If he got the gun he would shoot and kill Talon. I looked to the gun in my hand, wondering what I should do. Should I stand up and shoot the guy? What if I messed up and shot Talon?

Before I could make a decision, the guy had his hand on the gun. Talon jumped to his feet and ran to the guy. With one hard kick, he hit the guy in the ribs and sent him in the air. It was like Talon punted a soccer ball. The guy couldn’t hold the gun. He was in the air and then landed on his back. Talon then slowly walked to the man and put his big boot on his face. He stepped and the man started to scream.

“You’re going to move out of my fucking way,” Talon said to the other guys. “If you don’t, I’m going to kill him and then I’m going to kill each and every one of you.”

The two men with shotguns lifte
d their weapons. They pumped the shotguns and my heart damn near stopped.

“Fucking do it,” Talon said. “Pussies hesitate.”

Talon applied pressure to the guy on the ground. He screamed more. He ordered the guys to put their weapons down.

A couple seconds later there was distant sound of motorcycles. I feared that more of these guys were coming. The second this fight became an outnumbered fight, we were all screwed. Especially me.

The rumbling continued and when I saw the group of motorcycles pull up, it wasn’t for these guys. They were all part of Devil Call MC. Layne or Buzzy or something must have sent a message for a little back up.

I felt relieved and Talon took his foot off the guy’s face. He put his arms out and nodded.

“Remember who owns this town,” he said. “That includes these roads. The activities all around. I hope you boys saved all your damn money because you’re officially out of business.”

The two guys still held their shotguns up at Talon. But they weren’t going to shoot. The guy Talon had fought was trying to get to his feet, ordering everyone to calm the fuck down.

Talon came back to his motorcycle. He took his t-shirt and cleaned up his hands and his face. He then rolled the shirt up and threw it to the side of the road.

“No use for that now,” he said.

He then offered his hand to me and helped me stand. I stood feeling frozen as I stared at him. I had never seen a man so beautiful before. And the word beautiful was what kept coming to me. Slowly, I lifted my left hand and reached forward. I touched Talon’s sweaty chest, my fingertips burning, sending impulses all the way down my body. Even to my toes as they curled.

I felt turned on, broken, and desperate.

“Can I have my gun back?” Talon asked.

  “Yes.”

I gave him his gun. He tucked it into his pants and then grabbed his leather cut. He put it on and then got on his motorcycle. He pointed to his helmet and gave me a nod.

I looked back to Layne and saw him standing with his arms folded. Suddenly, I felt torn. Layne had always been the one I rode with. Layne had been the one who helped me. He gave me a room to stay in and feel comfortable. I only showered in his bathroom back at the clubhouse. He never tried to impose himself upon me like the other guys did.

Like Talon was doing right now.

The difference was that I wanted Talon to impose on me. I wanted him all over me. I wanted to fall to my knees under his command and do whatever he wanted.

  “Move out,” Talon yelled.

He started to creep forward and Layne appeared right next to us. I looked at Layne and when he turned his head, he looked at me for a quick second. His lip curled and then his eyes locked to Talon’s.

  “Move,” Talon yelled.

  “I am,” Layne called back.

He throttled his ride and took off. I felt Talon tense up. He wanted to be first. If he was the leader of the MC, it was his job to ride first. The move was a little defiance from Layne, but I knew it was more. Layne was such a hidden man, he let his actions speak for the words he held back.

I was uneasy as Talon started to ride. He made it all that much worse when he pointed his gun at the other group of guys. He started to shoot, purposely aiming too high. But it was enough that the guys scrambled off their motorcycles. The guys fell to the ground and their motorcycles did the same.

We arrived to the junkyard and then the clubhouse a little while later. A large group of Devil Call MC guys were waiting. They all started to applaud and cheer. Talon stopped his motorcycle and climbed off. I slowly took my helmet off, feeling a little stranded. All around, there were motorcycles, bikers, cheers. Bottles of beer and whiskey were already being passed around.

I hung back and watched the entire scene unfold. Everyone wanted to get near Talon. They wanted to touch him, hug him, tell him they all loved him and missed him so much. One of the guys started pouring beer over everyone and jumping, starting a wild cheer.

I felt someone next to me and looked to see Layne standing with his arms crossed.

  “Hey,” I said.

“The king has returned,” Layne said.

“No. Talon is back. This is as much yours as his, right?”

Layne looked at me. “You don’t know fucking shit about this life, Everly. No offense to you. There’s serious shit that needs to happen now. It’s going to be bloody for a while. I hope you’re ready for it.”

Layne took a step and I grabbed his arm. He turned and looked at me. For a second I thought he was hurt. The look on his face. The burning in his dark eyes.

“What am I supposed to do?” I asked.

“Whatever you’re told to do,” Layne said.

  “From you?”

Layne didn’t respond. His silence was loud enough of an answer.

“You know, you had chances,” I said. “I was right there… for your taking…”

“Maybe I knew better,” Layne said. “Maybe I knew what would be waiting and coming for you. Think about that for a second.”

  “Layne! Get over here!”

Voices were calling his name and Layne went to join the club.

It left me feeling cold and alone.

Had Layne protected me all this time just for the sake of Talon? What did that mean then?

I watched Talon take his leather cut off and hold it in the air. His back pulled tight with more muscle than I could count. Layne was in the mix of things too. But he was big and quiet. An observer.

“It’s time to settle up,” Talon announced. “Time to get to the table and figure out how bad things are around here.”

The mood started to quickly change. With just the simple command of Talon the party was over and things got serious. Talon gave some orders and the group of bikers started to break up. They all went into the clubhouse. I lingered back again and waited until it was just Layne standing at the door, holding it open for me. He gave a nod and I started to walk.

When I got to the door I paused and looked at Layne. “Should I be afraid?”

“In this life, if you fear anything, you end up dead. Fear is your greatest enemy, Everly.”

I wasn’t sure whether that made sense to me or not. I looked around and then bit my lip for a second. I was still so turned on my emotions were out of whack. Moving to my toes, I kissed Layne on the cheek.

  That was for the protection.

I then gently kissed his neck, feeling the stubble of his hair.

  That was to see…

My lips parted just enough to breathe on him.

  That’s when Layne walked away.

The door literally hit me in the ass and pushed me inside. The door clicked shut and I stood for a few seconds collecting myself.

What did I just try to fucking do?

I went through the second door and into the clubhouse. It was packed with men and women. I spotted Talon as he threw a shot of something back. He put the shot glass down and nodded. He then turned and pointed.

“You and you,” he said. “Let’s go.”

I thought he was calling for a meeting, but it wasn’t that.

Two half naked women walked to him and with one on each arm, Talon started to walk away from the bar. He looked back, his eyes managing to find me. He gave me a half smile and a wink.

What the fuck did that mean?

A hand touched my shoulder. “Don’t think about it, Everly.”

It was Layne. He was the last one I wanted to see right now. I shook my shoulder away. “Go fuck yourself, Layne.”

I went to the bar and walked around it. I found myself a full bottle of vodka. With that and a confused, fucked up heart, it was going to just be another normal day and night in my life.

  7.

  (Talon)

I just needed to get off quick. That’s all it was. The two chicks fought over my cock for a few minutes before I finally took each of them by the hair and guided them right where I wanted. When I came, I made sure they each got their taste
and share.

Then I was out of the fucking room.

If I wanted to fuck and I wanted to enjoy something, I’d grab Everly. She may have been wicked beautiful and very tempting to a man’s heart and mind, but she needed to understand the rules around here. There was a process that kept everyone alive and safe. That process may have been a little fucked up, but I was going to fix it. Devil Call MC would not become some club that falls apart because of guys running wild and acting like complete assholes.

As I walked to the front of the clubhouse again, my eyes looked for Everly. I spotted her behind the bar, leaning against a wall, a bottle of vodka in her hand. Buzzy sat at the bar, staring at her. He had that grin on his fucking face, his mind thinking of all the ways to fuck her.

I thought about going over and knocking Buzzy off his fucking barstool, but before I could do that, Layne appeared in front of me. He was in a nasty fucking mood, much like I was.

  “Can we talk?” Layne asked.

  “Yeah, man, let’s talk.”

We went into the room where the club met. Only a handful of members were allowed in the room. It was soundproof and goddamn bullet and bomb proof. It was the ultimate fortress to hide out if need be.

I shut the door and locked it.

Both Layne and I stood there staring at the chair at the head of the table. That’s where the President of the club sat. That’s where I had sat for a long time before going inside to serve my time in prison. The way Layne looked at the chair told me he had been sitting there while I was gone.

“You took my patch,” I said.

“I did,” Layne said. “But it’s not on me anymore.”

  “You sat in that chair?”

“Like I said, there was an image to keep.” Layne looked at me. “I didn’t let it go to my fucking head. I kept things as honest as I could.”

“I heard some stories. Fights. Murders. Drug running all around. Fuck, man, I was almost killed a few times inside.”

“I’m sorry, Talon,” Layne said. “You know how it is…”

I showed Layne the back of my neck. “You know about this?”

“No,” Layne said. “What the fuck happened.”
