The first three years of his life had left him scarred and distrustful of new people. But he had to trust Brittany enough to share more about himself or let her go.

Jared might still marry her. He’d lose them both. I can tell her. She’ll understand, and I’ll know I can trust her. But thinking about those memories still made him sweat.

Ward took off his bandana and wiped his face. He walked around the area. No one knew his secret but his adopted parents and Jared. The reports were sealed somewhere in the large city where he’d been born. His heart beat heavy. He had taught himself to close off those first years. There was no one else that needed to know unless he decided to marry, and now that moment was here. He did want Brittany as much as Jared did.

He walked to his truck and took out a bottle of cool water. Soon it would be four, and Boyd usually came home about that time. Ward would leave and get ready for their date. If only he had the nerve to tell her tonight and get it over with. Then he’d tightly shut that door in his head for the last time.

“What are you wearing tonight?” Sondra asked Britt.

Britt turned from where she was staring into her closet. “I don’t have a lot of clothes with me. But I do have one dress I think is sexy.” She pulled the jade-colored dress out and held it against her.

“I love the color, but you’d have to put it on before I could tell you whether I think it’s sexy or not. Anyway, why do you care, if you’re determined to return to New York?”

“I can play while I’m here.”

  “You might get burned.”

Britt didn’t respond. She was halfway in her dress. After straightening the short skirt, Sondra zipped her in and had her turn around. The dress had short sleeves, a low, heart-shaped neckline, and a snug top that hugged her full breasts. When she walked across the room the material clung to her every curve.

  “I have matching stiletto heels.”

“Not only will Jared’s and Ward’s mouths drop open but so will every man’s in the restaurant. Let’s have a little fun. You can wear my cape. It’ll cover the dress. Don’t take it off until you get inside. I’d love to have a picture of their faces.” Sondra laughed and clapped her hands. “See you in the great room.” Her sister closed the door behind her.

Britt stood back and observed herself in the mirror. She’d wear her hair down on her shoulders. The dress emphasized her curves. It was short and showed more of her legs than she usually exposed. When she’d seen the outfit in the window of an exclusive shop, she had hesitated about going in and trying it on. She knew the store carried high-quality and high-priced clothes. But after walking by two days in a row, she finally relented. Once she had it on, she had to buy it.

She was thankful now that she’d spent the money. It was perfect for tonight. She slipped her feet into the stiletto heels, wrapped Sondra’s cape around her, and grabbed her purse just as the doorbell rang. She heard Jared’s and Ward’s deep voices as they talked to Sondra and her husbands.

Jared glanced at the doorway when Britt walked through. “Ready to go?” he asked.

  “All ready. Hello, Ward.”

Ward nodded. He looked tense. Britt saw Sondra give him a questioning look.

“I guess this is as good a time as any to tell you all what I heard from Chad.”

Sondra motioned for them all to sit. Jared took Britt’s arm and had her sit on the sofa between him and Ward.

Ward told them how they hadn’t found the big boss and major ringleaders yet. Then he told them about Winscott.

Britt gasped and put her hand to her mouth. Jared put his arm around her.

“I didn’t like him, but I never wanted him to lose his life.”

Kel got up and paced the floor. “These guys are professionals. They won’t stop until they’re satisfied they’ve stopped any and all leaks. We need to be extra cautious.”

“Jared and I have been taking turns watching the house every day,” Ward said.

“You have?” Britt looked from one of them to the other.

“Yes. We wanted to help make sure you and Sondra were safe. Kel and Boyd wouldn’t have to worry about Sondra if we hadn’t brought you here.”

Kel frowned. “You don’t think my deputy is capable of watching out for them?”

“It’s not that, Kel. Four eyes are better than two. We have no idea what these guys are up to.”

“I, for one, thank you,” Boyd said. “And Kel will, too, as soon as he realizes you weren’t insulting his men’s abilities.”

Kel grinned. “Boyd knows how to show me I’m acting like an ass.” Everyone laughed, and the atmosphere in the room relaxed.

“I hope we’re still planning on going to dinner.” Sondra gave her husbands a look that said she wasn’t going to let them change their minds.

“Sure, why don’t we all go to the same place? Where had you two planned to take Britt?” Kel asked.

Jared explained about the restaurant out of town.

“I hadn’t thought of that place,” Boyd said. “We haven’t taken Sondra there yet. Let’s go. We can part company afterward. We’re going to the Leaning Post, but you three may have other plans.”

“We do,” both Jared and Ward said at once. Boyd and Kel chuckled. Sondra winked at Britt.

Ward put his hand at the middle of Brittany’s back. Jared led the way to their car. He opened the door.

“We thought we’d go in style tonight,” Ward whispered in her ear. He urged her to get in and slide across the seat.

“This is as crowded as the truck. Ward, you could sit in the back until we get to the restaurant,” Britt said.

“Nope. I’m not going to be relegated to the back seat. You might as well get used to us on either side of you.”

Ward got in beside her and closed the door. Britt looked from Ward to Jared. “What does that mean?”

Jared started the car and followed Boyd driving out in front of him. Ward put his arm around Britt. “You’ll find out later tonight, darlin’.”

Excitement and a tiny bit of fear made her shiver. Ward brushed his lips across her ear. “Don’t worry. You’ll like it.”

  Chapter Ten

Ward kept his arm around Brittany’s waist as they walked into the restaurant. Boyd, Kel, and Sondra were waiting with the hostess to take them to their table. She led the two threesomes through one dining room and into another. Then they walked to the left and stopped at a large table.

  “Is this agreeable?” she asked.

  “Fine, thank you,” Boyd said.

“If you ladies would like, I’ll take your wraps to the front and hang them up. When you are ready to leave, I’ll bring them to you.”

“Here’s mine.” Sondra stood and handed her the black jacket she’d worn. She stared at Britt with a smile curving her lips. “Britt, don’t you want to give her your wrap?”

Britt pretended to frown at her sister. She stood, stepped back from the table, and undid the two buttons holding her wrap together. As it slid off of her, she watched Ward’s and Jared’s expressions. They looked poleaxed. It was hard to keep in her laughter. She turned her back to them and handed the soft material to the hostess.

When she turned back, they still looked stunned. “Do you like my dress?”

Neither spoke at first, then Jared cleared his throat. “You look beautiful, or more beautiful than ever.”

  “Ward?” Britt loved needling him.

“You always look lovely to me. Isn’t it a little short? I’m not sure I like all the other men in the room ogling you.”

Britt glanced around the room. Several men were looking her way. She sat in the empty chair between Ward and Jared. “I don’t know, I kind of like the attention.” She picked up her menu. “Have you all decided what you want to eat?” Britt looked at Sondra, who was barely holding in her laughter, and at Sondra’s husbands, whose eyes sparkled with amusement.

“I’ve been too busy watching you three,” Sondra said. “Let me s
ee what they have.”

Jared leaned close. “You did that on purpose. Just wait until we get home.” He straightened and studied his menu.

Britt tried to read the menu, but her heart was pounding from the warm, delicious feeling his words had stirred inside her. She knew he wouldn’t hurt her, but what did he and Ward have planned for the latter part of their date? Her appetite for food was gone. Their scents floated in the air around her, her pussy ached for their attention, and her breasts tingled at the thought of their touch.

This was going to be the longest meal of her life.

  * * * *

Ward sensed her arousal and uneasiness. He planned to keep her on edge until the moment he sank his cock into her delectable pussy. Just the thought made him harden. He glanced at Jared sitting on her other side. Their eyes met and Ward knew Jared was as ready as he was to take their woman home and love her.

Boyd asked him a question, and as they talked, Ward kept his thigh touching Brittany’s. That she didn’t pull away encouraged him. When he spoke to Jared, he leaned against her shoulder. Her cheeks turned a lovely rose color and her breaths came quicker.

Boyd and Kel were busy talking to their wife and flirting with her. Ward took every opportunity to let Brittany know she wouldn’t escape him tonight.

“You’ve been spending more time in New York lately,” Kel commented.

“I have. Chad Stedman has let me go along on a couple of their jobs. He’s trying hard to discover the identity of the mastermind behind this gang of thugs. Whoever he is, he’s smarter than the rest. But”—he glanced at Brittany—“I plan to stay around the ranch more after we get the guy trying to kill Brittany.”

“We sort of figured you would.” Boyd grinned at him.

Jared put his arm around the back of Brittany’s chair. “The old homestead is less lonely with Brittany there. Losing Mom and Dad made us both want to avoid the house as much as possible.”

  * * * *

Brittany listened to their talk. They’d surrounded her with their large bodies and their enticing scent. Now, in their conversation they were marking her as theirs. It reminded her of a Lab puppy she’d had from the age of three. Once her puppy grew to his full size, he was determined to be her protector. When she came home, he stayed by her side or between her if someone dared to raise their voice in her direction.

In spite of her concerns about caring for Jared and Ward too much, she found she liked knowing they’d be there for her. But they might grow tired of her, as her ex-husband did, and find someone else. If either one or both did, how would she cope? She’d be much more devastated the second time around. In her first marriage she and her ex-husband were much more reserved with each other. She’d never experienced the strong desire and love that she had for Ward and Jared. The thought of them all three together sent a surge of excitement to her core.

“Are you cold?” Jared looked at her questioningly.

  “Why do you ask?”

“You shivered.” He took off his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders. “There isn’t much to that dress. This will keep you warm.”

His woodsy, musky scent enveloped her. Ward’s thigh stayed against hers, and they both made a point of touching her at every opportunity. She could barely swallow the food. Her desire for them to touch her and make love to her rose like a helium balloon freed from its tether.

Finally they ended the meal. Everyone but her had eaten all of their food.

“I wasn’t very hungry.” She tried to make an excuse, but hell, at this point she didn’t care. What she wanted was to go home with Jared and Ward and forget the rest of the world for tonight. She swallowed the last of her wine, and Jared pulled back her chair for her.

“Take my arm, darlin’. With the little you ate, the wine might make you trip on those high heels you’re balancing on.”

Britt wrapped her arm around his. They were behind Sondra and her husbands. She whispered in Jared’s ear. “Don’t you like them?”

“I sure like the way they emphasize your long, sexy legs.”

“And I like walking back here and getting the whole picture,” Ward said from behind them.

They’d dined so long most of the other patrons had gone, so no one else heard his comment. But Britt knew from the heat on her face that she was blushing.

Sondra came over to Britt and hugged her. “Have a good night.” She spoke softly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” She waved and walked to Kel’s truck. Boyd lifted her in and they all waved as Kel drove off.

“Can we go home now?” Britt asked.

“Darlin’, I thought you’d never ask.” Jared opened the door for her and she slid across to the middle. Ward got in beside her, and they were soon going down the road toward the Jarvis ranch.

“I shouldn’t have said ‘home.’ It’s your home, not mine.”

“It’s yours anytime you say yes.” Jared looked across at her.

She whispered loudly to Jared. “I don’t think Ward feels like you do.” The wine had loosened her tongue. She put her hand to her mouth as soon as the words came out.

Ward’s hand took hold of her thigh and tightened. “We’ll talk later when we’re both thinking more clearly.”

“You didn’t drink much wine.” She looked at him accusingly.

“No, I didn’t. My brain was centered on one thing, and I wanted to be thinking clearly.”

  “What?”

“Pushing my hard dick into your sweet pussy.” His hand moved up her thigh, under her dress, and between her legs. His fingers rubbed across the damp material of her panties. “You want us, too. I can smell your musky scent of arousal.” As he talked, he slipped his finger under her panties and rubbed her clit. Her pussy walls clenched and unclenched, creating a stronger desire for his touch. As though he read her mind, he moved a finger into her hot opening.

Her legs fell further apart. She reached under the steering wheel and rubbed the hard ridge of Jared’s cock pushing against the slacks he’d worn tonight.

“Ah, baby, be careful. I don’t want to put this car in a ditch. Much as I love your touch, it’d better wait a few more minutes.”

Ward pulled her face toward him and kissed her mouth hard. She gasped, and his tongue slid in, tangling with hers, tasting and exploring every spot. He put two fingers in her pussy and rubbed across her G-spot. Her arms wrapped around his neck.

He quickly unfastened and unzipped his slacks. He pulled back for a moment and grabbed a condom from his pocket. After he rolled it on his dick, he pulled Brittany’s panties off and had her straddle his lap. She sank down on his hard, wide cock. Ward pulled her dress opening wider and undid her bra. He sucked on her breast as she rose up and down on him.

Jared had turned onto the road to the house. It was a bit bumpy, which only intensified the feelings inside Brittany. Ward had filled her pussy to the limit. She went up and down, taking him deeper and deeper inside her. Jared kept one eye on the driveway and one on the couple beside him. As soon as he stopped the car he got out and unlocked the front door.

Britt slowed and looked at Ward and him. “Don’t stop now, sweetheart. You have me right at the edge.” Ward rubbed his finger across her clit and sucked harder on her breast. All thought of leaving the car was gone. Fiery heat spread throughout her body, and her need to reach the pinnacle led her on.

She quickened her movements. Ward bit lightly on her nipple, and a shudder and ripples began to roll up her body from her core. Ward was pumping hard into her now as she strained to reach more, and then the crescendo of feeling exploded, sending her over the edge.

Her pussy pulsed against Ward’s cock and she heard his shout as he came. His grip tightened on her for a second, holding her still. Her pussy was wrapped tight around his cock as it pulsed with his release.

He kissed her mouth. A smile quirked up his lower lip. “Not bad, not bad at all.”

Britt realized what she done and was embarrassed. She’d made love in a car, while it was mov
ing, and in front of Jared. She swung her legs off of Ward and picked up her panties from the car floor, where, in his hurry, he’d dropped them. She put them on and scooted out the driver’s side. Ward sat quietly, getting his breath and watching her. She leaned in and said, “You showed you can talk after sex. But it wasn’t enough, buster, not nearly.”

She stormed past Jared and went to her room, locking the door behind her. Jared knocked. “Let me in, darlin’.”

“No. I feel foolish and embarrassed. Go away.”

“Never.” There was silence for a moment, and then a loud slam as his shoe hit the lock on the door and kicked it in.

“What do you think you are doing?” she screamed at him.

She tried to hit him when he took her in his arms.

“I’m doing what’s best for you. We aren’t going to play games and go to bed upset with each other. You can sleep alone if you wish, but I don’t want you feeling embarrassed or thinking that Ward doesn’t sincerely care about you. He does. And I love you.”

Tears ran down her face. She’d stopped struggling. Jared sat on the bed with her on his lap. “Tell me what happened in your first marriage. What did the bastard do to hurt you and make you almost as mistrustful as Ward?”

Ward had come to the doorway. “Is she all right?”

“She will be. Come on in and draw up a chair.”

  “I don’t want him here.”

“We both need to hear what you have to say.” Jared persisted. Ward pulled the chair by the wall to the bedside.

Britt didn’t want to tell them. Her ex-husband had shamed her, and made her feel unlovable. But they might as well know. She could judge their reaction, well, Jared’s. Ward didn’t show his feelings.

She looked at Jared and told them about her husband bringing his girlfriend to the apartment, about how before that visit Britt had been looking at houses outside the city for them. She hadn’t known he was cheating on her.
