Akash knew she would remember everything one day and come back to him.

He’s still waiting for that day.

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Writing this book has made me realize two things.

One: The Universe indeed conspires to bring it all together for us to do what we believe in and dream of. This book is proof of that, if at all one was needed. In 2013, I moved to Gurgaon, a city where I knew nobody. Over the years I met some amazing people and forged many new friendships. With every step I got closer to fulfilling a long-cherished dream. Now when I think about it, everything feels like destiny: all of this was meant to happen.

Two: A book, although written in solitude, is seldom a solitary act. It’s really a culmination of thoughts and feelings derived from experience and from people one has met. A Forgotten Affair had a similar genesis. I owe this book to so many people – some of them walked with me, some walked away and some just crossed my path albeit briefly but left a lasting impression. But they have all contributed in shaping me, my sensibilities and helped me become who I am. So, in no particular order, I’d like to extend grateful thanks to some people who’ve touched my life in more ways than one.

Kiran Chaturvedi: for reading the manuscript multiple times and giving valuable feedback. Every Write & Beyond workshop we did together helped me grow, think and write. Ruchira Shukla and Rickie Khosla: thank you for your honest and valuable suggestions; they helped me improve the manuscript. Sakshi Nanda: you’re the best beta reader I could have hoped for. Your comments helped me shape the story and turn it into what it is today.

The HarperCollins team is really the best a debut author can hope for. Ajitha, thank you for noticing my pitch at Bangalore Litfest’s Litmart session and connecting me to the rest of your team. Karthika, you believed in me and my novel – I can’t thank you enough for that. Bonita, grateful thanks for the elegant cover design.

There’s a reason why authors want to kill their editors but also love them the most. Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri, thank you for making the book what it is today. Arcopol Chaudhuri, you stood by the book from the manuscript stage to its final form. Thank you for your support and guidance.

A book needs some quiet and peace to be written well and I have to thank my husband, Sandeep, for giving me the space and comfort to do that – and even rave and rant, sometimes! I can be quite difficult and crazy while writing, so thank you for putting up with me. Rohan, my son, thank you for being my biggest cheerleader, a constant source of support, and lots more.

  About The Book

Sagarika Mehta walks out of her nine-year-old marriage, meets with a near-fatal accident and goes into a deep coma all on the same day. After six months, she wakes up with no memory of her past. When she is discharged from hospital a year later, Rishab, her husband, whisks her away to an unfamiliar address in Gurgaon to convalesce.

There, in that plush apartment, with people waiting on her hand and foot, Sagarika can’t shake off the feeling that something is wrong.

Why does the scent of a particular cologne unsettle her? Why does the innocuous word ‘cheeni’ bother her? And why is Rishab so evasive in response to her queries about her past?

A Forgotten Affair is a gripping story of a woman caught between two worlds.

  About The Author

After writing feature articles for various publications, PR firms and companies for nearly two decades, Kanchana Banerjee decided to pursue her long-cherished dream – to write a novel. She holds a master’s degree in English from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She lives in Gurgaon with her husband, son and two dogs, Archie and Casper.

A Forgotten Affair is her first novel.
