The Rhythm

Smiling, he had to admit she was right on that point. Pouring her a glass of wine, he sat across from her. From the food cart by his side, he lifted off a plate of appetizers. Settling it between them, he pulled the lid off to show her the bite-sized morsels. Stuffed mushrooms were her favorite he knew, which meant he wasn’t at all surprised when she let out a low moan of pleasure when the scent surrounded them both.

Over the next hour, he fed her all her favorite foods while they talked and laughed. It was fun to feed her small bites and watch her sigh as the flavors slid over her tongue. She insisted on feeding him too. He’d never realized how intimate a meal could be until sharing one with her.

After cleaning up a bit, he set the dessert dish before her leaving the lid on top. Her expression showed how curious she was to see what else he’d come up with, but she kept her hands in her lap. Amazing the restraint she could exhibit when she truly wanted to.

Lance took a sip of his wine before setting the glass aside. Finally he reached for the lid, gave her a grin, and lifted it clear of the plate. When her eyes went wide, he eased down onto a knee at her side.

  “Lance?” she whispered in confusion.

Taking one of her hands gently in his, he lifted it to press a kiss to her fingers. “I can’t imagine a life without you at my side, Jennifer Mitchell. I don’t know what the future might bring, but I do know the only way I could confront it would be with you, sweetheart. Will you marry me?” he asked.

Her wide-eyed gaze slid to meet his. For long moments Lance sweated, a lump forming in his gut when she stayed silent. Only when she gave a nod and burst into tears did relief slide through him. Scooping her up from her seat he hugged her close while she repeatedly told him, “Yes.”

Over the fence, he saw four heads pop up with questioning looks. He threw them a thumbs-up that had grins breaking out all over the place. They all gave him answering thumbs-up before heading off to their own homes.

Tomorrow the others would come by to offer up congratulations. But tonight was for him and Jennifer.

Leaning his head back, he pressed a kiss to her forehead as she hung on to him tightly. “I have you, sweetheart. And I’m never letting go.” It was a promise he intended to keep. While his life might often be a turbulent mess, with people always coming and going, there was one constant he could rely on for all time. His love, his heart, his Jennifer.
