  Francis Bacon – The famous English scientist. Some say he was Shakespeare. Sur Spear used the pseudonym of Francis Bacon while he was a spy in his youth.

  Franz – A Quailor man. Elijah’s heir to the position of Chief High Priest.

  Freak Maker, the – See Gloomulah

  Freckle Fox – Sur Sceaf’s endearing term for his wife Lana.

  Frey – The Herewardi god of fertility

  Freya – The Herewardi goddess of fertility, AKA The Good Goddess

  Friddle – A chief steward in Hrusburg

  Friedrich Durer – Lana’s father and Sur Sceaf’s father-in-law and a devout Quailor man.

  Fringle – A chief steward in Hrusburg

  Frink Glen Clan – A combination clan composed of Sharaka and Klamath tribesmen who keep their flocks and herds in the High Desert. They were attacked by one of the first acts of coordinated aggression in the West by the Pitter legions.

  Fritz Walner – A Quailor man, he cares for the distraught Dori Scheible

  Fritz Walner – A young Quailor man, part of the Retrenchment movement that was captured at the Massacre at Salem, rescued from Pitters by Sur Sceaf and his fyrds.

  Fromer Muckenschnabel – A Quailor dycon, head of the Retrenchment Core and Movement and constant thorn in High Priest Elijah’s side, as well as Sur Sceaf’s. His zealotry causes much mayhem among the allied tribes and the Quailor especially. AKA Old Mosquito Beak, Mosquito.

  Fyrd – A band of 144 elite Herewardi warriors. The men usually remain part of the same fyrd most of their lives, serving under a single heretoga. They begin their bonding as a military unit while still young blood warriors.

  Gloomulah – the Queen of the Under World located in the Poisoned Lands.

  God’s Retrenchment Core – The leadership of the Retrenchment Movement among the Quailor who constitute a new order of the most stalwart believers in conservative Quailorism.

  Idunn, Goddess – She is the guardian goddess of the apples of life who sings the songs of the graces, laws, and attributes of all the Gods to prepare worthy mortals for the journey to immortality and life among the Gods. Blessed are those who hear her songs in dreams or meditations.

  Walpurga, Goddess – Herewardi goddess who attends and blesses the waters and the flora of the lands.

  Yster, Goddess – A Herewardi goddess of fertility. Her sign and token is the pink moon, or the Moonth of the Skipping Lambs called April.

  Godgifu – A young Herewardi woman. Marries Ilkchild.

  Godhi – Herewardi priests in the synagogue of Odhin versed in the lore of Herewardom, its history, traditions, and implementation of blessings.

  Godija – Herewardi priestesses who serve in the synagogue of Freya.

  Going Snake – Mendaka’s youngest son whom we first encounter at age seven years old. His hound Fur Puller was the catalyst for the encounter of Taneshewa and Sur Sceaf. AKA Chipmunk

  Goldhart – a young son of Sur Sceaf.

  Govannon – The master-wizard from the White Mountains of the Apache who rejected being an ascended master in order to remain on Ea-Urth to serve his people. He is half Herewardi and half Apache as well as the adoptive father of Wilona the White and was known to be the greatest metallurgist and sword-artificer of all times.

  Grandmother Wisdom – One of the oldest of beings known to the Sharaka and Herewardi alike.

  Godgifu, the Great Lady – Instituted the Rite of Yays and Nays to protect women from coercion and forced marriage.

  Alph, The Great Lore Master – A Herewardi lore master of the distant past. Taught that the weakest point of a relationship is the strongest, so long as there is love and trust.

  Great Wife, the – A term conferred upon great ladies of renown. See Paloma

  Green Beetles – The youngest order of Herewardi messengers within the Herewardi Kingdom. They are page-boys who are usually around the age of young puberty.

  Greta – One of the girls in a wagon that gets stuck on the trek.

  Growling, the – This is a race of humans who suffer a deforming skin disease causing them to have blisters and blains all over their entire bodies. They are the subjects of Queen Gloomulah, who is the queen of the Underground.

  Habraham – A Quailor High Priest Quorum Leader and devout supporter of the alliance. AKA Hab, Haby

  Haeland, the – Any divinely appointed leader of all Herewardi usually designated by the name All-King.

  Hagele – Quailor family.

  Half-King, the – A name for Kanarus. Called the Half-King because he is not officially recognized as a king by the Roufytrouf though he has the bloodline for it, so he acts as an irregular king but has the potential to earn the Roufytrof’s authorization, at which point he would become a true king.

  Haligewaecca – A Herewardi High Priestess and the presiding wife of a bride covey.

  Hamidraca – A daring Pitter commissar from Eugene leading several legions through Coke Hill, and intercepted by Bear Jim, Arundel, and the Young Bloods.

  Haredic Jywd – the order of Jywds who are esteemed to be the most devout.

  Hargemut – see Hartmut

  Hartmut Hagele – Perhaps Sur Sceaf’s closest friend among the Quailor. He is a man grieving, for his wife was killed by the Pitters while she was out picking berries. He once was a high priest and highly honored Ephrata member, but was removed from his stations of authority due to his inability to perform his duties under the burden of depression. Aka Old Hard Mud, the Black Hatter.

  Has-A-Flute – the mother of Sur Sceaf’s wife, Shining Moon.

  Hats-A-Fit – An old friend of Mendaka’s.

  Heilige Schrift – the Quailor Holy Books.

  Heimdall (lore master) – A lore master of the Academy at Maiden’s Head.

  Heimdall (the man) – Master of the Scriptorium at the Maiden’s Head Academy.

  Heinrich Stoltzfuss – A Quailor man. As a young man he was a fishing buddy of Sur Sceaf’s in Salem. He married a Rogue woman. Travels with the Quailor to Glide Garth after the Massacre.

  Heretoga – A leader of an Herewardi army composed of either one or many fyrds.

  Hereward – Ancient longfather of the Herewardi people. He is the Ur-Father of the Herewardi tribes and the founding progenitor of the same.

  Herewardi – The descendants of an enclave of scholars, priests, and warriors, who restored the tribe of Hereward in the early days before the collapse of civilizations.

  Herewose – A son of Pyrsyrus. Travels with his father on the trek.

  Herewulf – The child of Shining Moon and Sur Sceaf

  Herman Kesselmacher – A huge Quailor man sometimes referred to as the Giant. Quiet and reserved, he is shunned by the Quailor community. As of Book II it is unknown what crime he has committed for which he is being stigmatized and shunned but he carries the aged woman Lila Stobie in his arms during the trek, earning him much respect among both the Herewardi and Sharaka. AKA the Kettlemaker, The Quailor Giant

  Hermod – father of Bronoak.

  Hickathrift – A Herewardi “beard” or spy, disguised as a Hickoryan merchant. He is married to Faeimp.

  Hickoryans – The human inhabitants of the south eastern portion of Panygyrus, who form secret alliances and shadow governments against the oppressive Pitter Empire. They name themselves in honor of the hickory tree which is known for its strength, endurance, and deep-rootedness.

  Holla – A Herewardi woman. A “beard” of the Sire Sheaf. Married to Hunna. Spying on the Pitter movements in the East.

  Hornmead – A commander of one of Melyngoch’s fyrds

  Hospitalers – The highly trained order of doctors and nurses among the Quailor.


  House of a Hundred Elders, The-also known as the Syr-Alfim, a priestly order of Herewardi.

  Hrafn – See Raven’s Tongue

  Hrethel – A Herewardi man who married a much younger woman. His son fell in love with her and they ran away together, causing the family to fall apart.

  Hrolf – a Herewardi goldsmith.

  Hrothgar – see Jackie Doo

  Hrus-Syr-Os – the founding father of the Herewardi people.

  Hryre Seath – The Pitter Emperor.

  Hunna – A Herewardi man. A “beard” of the Sire Sheaf. Married to Holla. Spying on the Pitter movements in the East.

  Hussa – A Herewardi man. A “beard” of the Sire Sheaf. Married to Lilla. Spying on the Pitter movements in the East.

  Hwita – A Herewardi man. A “beard” of the Sire Sheaf. Married to Ymma. Spying on the Pitter movements in the East.

  Ilfwin – A wife of Sur Spear’s father. When she married, she was young and beautiful and of Sur Spear’s same age. Because Sur Spear fell in love with her he lfled her presence to become a spy in the East so as to avoid Ilfwin and his feelings for her, which if he had left unchecked could have caused great harm to his family. When he returned from the East he no longer was in possession of her lure.

  Ilkchild – Son of Ilker. Brother of Faechild and adopted son of Sur Sceaf who is reknowned for his perfection of beauty and comeliness.

  Ilker – the Father of Kanarus, Ilrundel, Ilkchild, and Faechild. He was the scion of Baldurean royalty whose grave was never found.

  Ilklilith – Sister of Ilkchild. Twin to Elfhava. Arundel’s fiancé.

  Ilrundel – Heretoga of the Fort Rock fyrds, the son of Ilker. Escorts Sur Sceaf and his comrades into Fort Rock from Buzzard Run.

  Isabelle von der Vogelweide – The youngest child of Rudolf and Verushka. Sur Sceaf develops a strong fatherly bond and love for this little girl.

  Ish – A genetic engineer from the far past. One of the creators of the Pitter species.

  Jack Russellson – a man conceived during the Feast of Ev-Rhett. So named to denote he is of unknown father, but under Herewardi law considered of legal parentage by reason of the covenant governing all children born during the Sabbath of May.

  Jackal, the – see Scynscatha

  Jackie Doo – The name of endearment for Hrothgar, known as Crooked Jack.

  Jahweh – The name by which Moses of the bible called on God.

  Jakob Inteus Walker – A Balmorean, married to the evil Yggep of the Poisoned Lands. He is a conniving traitor who made a pact with the Pitter Zonga of Eugene to betray and decoy the Herewardi away from the Gates of the Umpqua.

  Jasher, the book of – An apocryphal book dealing with many of the same characters as are found in the bible, such as Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and more.

  Jerry Cochran – The richest merchant in Charly’s Harbor and personal friend of Melyngoch.

  Jesse ben David – A young Jywd studying at the Academy. Hired as scribe at Ur Ford while Long Swan is away for the whaling venture. The brother of Ruth, who is the wife of Rabbi Amschel.

  Jesus Christ – As described in the bible, a Jywdic god worshipped by the Quailor and many rogue nations people, also worshipped by Va-Eyra and her order of the Rose Rood.

  Jezebel (bible) – A queen in the bible known for her conniving, seductive and murderous ways.

  Jonah (bible) – The biblical Jonah swallowed by a fish and spit out three days later.

  Jorgmungand – Father of Andrimnir. Fought side by side with Sur Spear in the Taxus Lands.

  Joseph – Father of Jesus, as described in the bible.

  Judith – Judith of the bible. She was a well-spoken heroine, who slays the enemy of Israel in his own tent, thus freeing Israel from siege.

  Jywds – An ancient race many of who escaped the labor camps of Nu Yalk and fled to the West for sanctuary.

  Jywds of Esdraelon – The Jywds who live along the Jordan River of Salmalheur.

  Kanarus – Aka the Half-King. Born with the name Kane and ater was named by his men Kanarus, meaning “Kane, descendant of Arundel, and Hrus.” He is the son of Ilker and leads a band of irregular Herewardi fyrds in the White Mountains of the Apache. His people are called the Kaninchens by the Quailor and the Apache and refers to the fact that they breed like rabbits.

  Kaninchens – The descendants and adherents of the Half-King Kanarus whom the Apache call Yellow Rabbit for his yellow hair and the Quailor called Kaninchen because his tribe grew to numbers exceeding the breeding of rabbits;

  Karl Throckmorton – a wise traveling merchant and long-time friend of the Herewardi.

  Katus – The Blind Seer Pitter who is the head of the Black Brotherhood. He manages to tap into the powers of the Dark Elves and receives their grooming for their subversive plots in the Ea-Urth. AKA Cato

  Khem Welsh – The Black friend of Sur Sceaf and his sons, the husband of Annie and one of the few remaining Blacks freed from Pitter enslavement camps.

  Kingdom of Syra-Coos located in East Sound of the Sand Wand Islands in the North and the first Kingdom to be built of stone since the migration of the Herewardi from the Taxus.

  Klamath Tribe – A tribe of Red Men who pre-existed and persisted through the earth changes and collapse of earthly governments. They live in the Klamath Basin.

  Lana – The Quailor and second wife of Sur Sceaf, whom he betrothed at the young age of seventeen. Mother of Brekka. AKA Freckle Fox

  Ledaflaed – Mother of Pyrsyrus, wife of Sur Spear.

  Leowulf Sharpknife – The heretoga at Charly’s Harbor under Melyngoch. Goes to battle at Coke Hill along with Melyngoch.

  Lilith Durer – Lana’s mother and Sur Sceaf’s mother-in-law who is a devout Quailor woman.

  Lilla – A Herewardi woman. A “beard” of the Sire Sheaf. Married to Hussa. Spying on the Pitter movements in the East.

  Linney Knighton – A Quailor Dycon who voted with Fromer to remain autonomous and separated from the three tribes and a strong proponent of the Retrenchment Movement. He is a constant gossip and shit-stirrer along with his master Fromer.

  Little Doe – Wife of Sur Sceaf’s blood brother, Mendaka.

  Little Red Fox – see Brekka

  Lizard Killer – A Red Man tracker. He was known for his angry outbursts, but Coyote helped him overcome his temper. Sent to find the stolen Quailor Children.

  Long Swan – Sur Sceaf’s most beloved brother, the son of Sur Spear and Ethelwynn who was raised as a wizard from a very young age. He is the youngest lore master in Herewardi history. AKA Feather.

  Longfather Howrus – A forefather of the Herewardi. He is the son of Hrus-Syr-Os who avenged his father’s death and led the surviving Herewardi to their refuge in the wilderness of the Appalachians. He is the author of the Forty-Four Laws.

  Lord of Charly’s Harbor – see Melyngoch

  Lord of the Wild Hunt – Another name for Odhin

  Ludmilla – Lana’s younger sister and Sur Sceaf’s sister-in-law from the Quailor Tribe.

  Macbah – A Jywdic girl. Intelligent and a gifted singer. She is a cantor in the synagogue and one of Arundel’s fiances.

  Madge Thompson – A Tensee Hickoryan woman. Pregnant during the track, hoping her baby will be born in Witan Jewell rather than on the trail.

  Mahallah – The ruling queen of the Herewardi, alongside her husband Sur Spear. Daughter of Ludwig von Hollar and Redith. Mother of Sur Sceaf. She is hHlf Quailor and Half Sharaka.

  Malcolm of Omala – AKA Gondulwulf. A great wizard of the Herewardi in the Taxus lands. The father of Paloma. An unprecedented King, Warrior, and Wizard whose rule over the Taxus Land brought much prosperity until the invasion of the Pitter Horde.

  Margot Green – A Black woman. She is a leader of a Hickoryan band that joins with the allied three tribes and she is known for getting her way. AKA Big Boss.

  Markus Rohm – A Quailor man involved in Fromer’s subversive plotting against the union of the three tribes. Seeks to remove Elijah von Hollar
from office and excommunicate Hartmut from the Quailor people.

  Mary – Mother of Jesus, as described in the bible and venerated by the followers of the Rose Rood.

  Master Builder, the – See Muryh

  Melyngoch – Brother of Sur Sceaf and son of Sur Spear and Clotilde who believes himself to be the best choice for the commission to unify and lead the three tribes. He has been groomed and manipulated by his mother to take part in slandering and attempts to supersede his brother Sur Sceaf after Sur Sceafs election.

  Mendaho – Taneshewa’s closest friend and also a dear friend of Sur Sceaf. She is the scholarly keeper of the Mountain Scrolls which contain the history the Sharaka people. AKA Meny

  Mendaka – Sur Sceaf’s blood-brother and best friend from youth. He is the Sharaka talking chief of the Snake Clan and the loyal advocate of Sur Sceaf amongst the tribes of Red Men. He was named Mendaka by his father. It is an honored name, meaning “the Belt of Os” in the folk mouth of the Herewardi, or “the belt of Orion” among the Sharaka medicine men. Both peoples hold the belief that the constellation of the Hunter is the place of their origin.

  Meny – Nick name for Mendaho.

  Mesculera Coloratus – An Apache chief and advocate of the Herewardi visiting the Sharaka at Unequa.

  Mexus – the race of people descended from the one time Mexicans.

  Mik Kurtz – A shady character mentioned by Bear Jim as a thief and Beoelf as a possible Pitter spy in Charly’s Harbor.

  Milkchild – She is the Jywdic wife of Sur Sceaf and daughter to the honorable Rabbi Amschel ben Levi. She is Sur Sceaf’s fourth wife.

  Miriam von Hollar – A Quailor woman and wife to Elijah von Hollar.

  Moses (bible) - A prophet in the bible brought up to support the Herewardi practice of plural marriage.

  Mother Urth – the Oldest of all living beings, the Queen of Fates and Destiny.

  Muckenschnabel – The last name of the Quailor dycon Fromer.

  Muryh – Also known as The Master Builder. He is the Great architect of the stone city of the Sand Wand Islands as well as the fortress at Fort Rock.
