  Ndee – What the Apache call themselves.

  Norn Sisters – They are the three sisters of fate, who existed before the world was created and are greater than all the gods. They are eternal and enduring.

  Nunnehi – The spiritual protectors of the Red Men.

  Oberon – The king of the faeries in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.

  Ochoco Tribe – an independent tribe of Red Men from the High Desert.

  Odhin – The Sky-Father who according to lore, legend, and the Folk-Mouth is the earliest father of the Herewardi people and the chief of the Herewardi gods.

  Ol’ Dutch – Bear Jim’s brindle shepherd dog.

  Old Grokk – see Elfbeard

  Old Mosquito Beak – see Fromer

  Olf (of Mt. Skell) – Father of Ethelflaeda, who marries Ilkchild.

  Onamingo – He is Sharaka chief of chiefs and is of Cherokee descent. He is also the father of Taneshewa and married to Dancing Rabbit. All tribes know him as the Red King, so great was his wisdom and strength.

  Order of Mawva, the – Mawva established the Order of Priestesses in Herewardom, as well as formed the first bride-covey among the Herewardi that started the Herewardi on the road to becoming a polygamist nation.

  Orsini – A jovial inn-keeper in Witan Jewell and close friend of Sur Sceaf .

  Os – The Herewardi name for the creator god who rules as the god of all gods.

  Paloma – Sur Sceaf’s first wife. The daughter of the famed wizard Malcolm Gondolwulf of the Omala and the faery-queen of Sur Sceaf’s bride-covey. She is the head of the Council of Women mother to Arundel III

  Pitters – a Transhuman species, devoted to the worship of Angrar, their god and creator. They are part rat and part human and were bred to be humanity’s foremost enemy.

  Prancing Owl – the wife of Chief Burnt Tobacco. Mother of Mendaho.

  Prester – a religious group of people who dwell in the valleys of the Rocky Mountains in the Land of Salmalhuer.

  Prisca – a young daughter of Sur Sceaf. Crowns Taneshewa as the May Queen.

  Pyringean Pirates – Also known as Pyr-Ring-Ean Pirates, Fire-Ring Pirates. These are Pyrsyrus’ elite naval force. The pirates attack Pitter cities along the seaboard and any Pitter vessels that make it out to sea. They are considered one of the most powerful naval forces in the known world.

  Pyrsyrus – The son of Syrus (aka Sur Spear). He is King of the Sand Wand Islands. He is also the first Herewardi king of this era to reach the third stage of civilization – which is to build cities of stone.

  Quailor – A pacifist religious culture that believes in the Christ. They govern themselves by a collection of books they call The Complete Holy Scriptures.

  Queen Aso – The wife of Hryre Seath, and Queen of Pitterdom

  Queen of the Underworld – see Gloomulah

  Rabbi Amschel ben Levi – A Jywdic rabbi, often just referred to as The Rabbi. He is an ambassador of the Herewardi to the Quailor and oft times other peoples. He has adopted the practice of polygamy as practiced by his forefathers and acts as the impartial judge during the trial of Gal Fawkes v. Lord Sur Sceaf, due to his not being a part of any of the tribes involved in the conflict.

  Rabbi Khur-Om – A great Jywdic scholar and Jesse ben David’s teacher, for whom he acted as scribe.

  Rabenfae – Paloma’s mother, married to the Great Wizard, Malcolm of Omala.

  Raven’s Tongue – A highly skilled Tlingit seaman who is a whaler and a fisherman and a close friend of Pysyrus. AKA Hrafn

  Red Horse – A Cheyenne from the distant past. Milkchild studied his written history, in which he mentions the constitution of the United States. He describes the destruction of the American empire and why it collapsed.

  Red Horse – A Cheyenne historian described the Constitution of the United States, but did not supply a copy of the Constitution to be read.

  Red Nations – All Red Men Nations.

  Redelfis – Son of Mendaka and Little Doe. Although he is a Sharaka youth he has the unusual trait of being red haired.

  Redith – Grandmother (Mo Mo) of Sur Sceaf. She is a gifted seeress and one of the 22 female leaders in the Roufytrof. She is also Sagwi and Thunder Horse’s sister, all of Sharaka descent. Aka Do-Tsu-Wa, Red Bird

  Rekindler – Sur Sceaf’s replacement mount when White Fire needs to rest. The offspring and get of White Fire.

  Retrenchment Society – An extremely conservative branch of the Quailor presided over by Fromer Muckenshnabel and his dycons which constitutes a new and zealously xenophobic faith which jeopardizes the safety of all Quailor society.

  Rip Porter AKA Rip the Prester – Once an apostle of the Prester people in the Rocky Mountains, Rip has been sent to form bonds of friendship with the Herewardi and investigate the alliance of the three tribes. He is an apostate of the Prester faith, yet does the bidding of the leadership of the Presters who remain invested in his wise council. He becomes a quick friend to the allied peoples.

  Robin Goodfellow – a mythical woodland spirit who attends the Feast of May to spread his magic over young lovers.

  Rogue Nations – A loose conglomeration of white tribes. Most of which give no allegiance to any confederation.

  Rogue Tribes – See Rogue Nations.

  Roufytrouf – The ruling council of the Herewardi composed of 44 members, 22 males and 22 females.

  Rudolf von der Vogelweide – Husband of Verushka and Lana’s brother-in-law who is a staunch Retrencher who follows Fromer’s commands without question. He cultishly decides to be one of several families that remain in Salem after the exodus.

  Russell – One of “The Twins.” Twin to Ev’Rhett. A mischievous little boy. The son of the Lore Master Swan Hilde and Sur Sceaf.

  Ruth – Wife of Rabbi Amschel ben Levi , famous for her organizational skills.

  Saga-Jah-El-Ea – A descriptive Apache name for Wilona meaning, “She who descends from the gods.”

  Sagawis – See Sagwi

  Sagwi – Sur Sceaf’s great aunt and shamanic advisor. She advises many of the younger generation and is the Sharaka midwife and medicine woman.

  Samson (bible) – The biblical hero of great strength, referenced to acknowledge Herman’s great strength.

  Sarai – Fromer’s contentious and brow beaten wife.

  Scynscatha – AKA The Jackal, The Cha’Kal, whom the Herewardi consider to be a Skin Walker.

  Seed of the Woman – A hero long prophesied who will come to overthrow the Pitter Empire.

  Seven Faery Mothers of Heredom – these are the respective Faery-Queens of the Seven Longfathers of Herewardom.

  Shakespeare – The renowned playwright and poet of England.

  Sharaka – A tribe of mixed origins, they are mainly composed of Cherokee and Herewardi.

  Sharaka Talking Chiefs – The chiefs who have been chosen as spokesmen for the clans and tribes of the Sharaka

  Shark-Moon-Boy – Turtle Duck’s youthful son. Sur Sceaf chooses Shark-Moon-Boy to be a farseer on the first whaling venture.

  Shining Moon – Sur Sceaf’s sixth wife, a Sharaka, and dear friend of Mendaho.

  Shug Moss – The leader of the Colomba Rogues who became a valuable ally of the three tribes. It is he who saves what Quailor he can at the Massacre at Salem.

  Sigmund – A 19 year old Herewardi man who desires to court Sur Sceaf’s 15 year old daughter, Aryfae.

  Silas Halterman – A Quailor youth who impregnated the Quailor girl, Bruna, out of wedlock. They married before the pregnancy was publicized.

  Silver Harriers – The second stage in a young blood’s training. They act as scouts, circuit riders and couriers for the military. They are usually between the ages 15 and 16.

  Sire Sheaf, the – A Sir
e Sheaf refers to the sheaf of barley laid over for the next season’s planting and thus are a select group of children from the royal bloodline elected, preserved, and chosen to act in accordance with the will of the Roufytrof and their master plan. It is a secret Herewardi organization, AKA the Seventh Kingdom and is composed of men and women of the Herewardi interspersed among the peoples of Panygyrus. They act as spies and educators spreading good will for the Herewardi tribe until the ends of the master plan are fulfilled.

  Skin Walker – In both Herewardi and Sharaka cultures a human capable of altering form and becoming animal like in appearance by possession of super natural powers.

  Skull Worm – A Pitter commissar known to be especially brutal and severe and purportedly of more than usual human seed code.

  Slep – Melyngoch’s horse.

  Snake Asker – A Sharaka wise man who predicts early winter rains and recommends the three tribes get moving as soon as possible to migrate into Witan Jewell.

  Snake Horse – He is Onamingo’s right hand man who is a Cherokee and tusband of Morning Bird who fought for Sur Sceaf in the battle of Frink Glen.

  Snowmen – The Red Men tribes of the northern Kanada.

  Sodom and Gomorrah – A reference to the biblical city that was destroyed for its wickedness.

  Solomon (bible) – A rich and mighty king of the bible, known for his wisdom, many wives, and ability of harmoniously mingling diverse religions.

  Sparrow Hawk – The older sister of Taneshewa, and the daughter of Onamingo and Dancing Rabbit.

  Spirit Chiefs – They are powerful medicine men who have distinguished themselves through talents and services. They come from many Red Men tribes.

  Standing Bull – A member of the Klamath tribe who joined the Sharaka at DiAhman. He was rejected for the most part from the Klamath tribe for his rebelliousness within the tribe and his rakish fornication for which he had been known. He is the foremost of the ruffians that accosted Sur Sceaf on the trail to DiAhman and it is he who stood as opposition against Surrey in the plan of uniting the three tribes.

  Starkwulf – The original name of the Wose, the former king in Zamora.

  Stonyford – It is a Herewardi fortress in the near Snow Mountain in the Northern Kalifornias. Also known as the Stonyford Stronghold.

  Sunchild – The first born son of Turfrida and Rabbi Amschel ben Levi. A Jywdic young blood, his mother being Herewardi, his father Jywdic. He is part of the young blood twelver that goes with Mendaka to find Sur Sceaf and assists in killing the Pitters that captured him.

  Sur Sceaf – AKA Surrey-One of the youngest of the 44 sons of Sur Spear. He possesses lineage from all three of the three tribes, Herewardi, Quailor, and Sharaka and is thus commissioned by the Roufytrof to lead the three tribes to the safety of the coast.

  Sur Sceaf Aelfhereward – Sur Sceaf’s secret name, known only to Taneshewa and revealed during the Rite of the Veil in the Secret Place.

  Sur Spear – The high king of Herewardom. The father of Sur Sceaf, Pyrsyrus, and Va-Eyra. Aka Syrus, and the Traveler.

  Surrey – This is the familial and the diminutive name for Lord Sur Sceaf.

  Swan Hilde – The fourth wife of Sur Sceaf. She is also a member of the Roufytrof, Lore Master, and a witch (wise-woman) of the Herewardi.

  Swan Ray – Ilker’s youngest wife who is now married to Pyrsyrus but the marriage remains unconsummated as she scorns to share his bed. She grieves unendingly for her lost husband. She is a seeress, and claims that Ilker yet lives. No one believes her and she is considered delusional by most who know her. She is no longer respected as a seeress, as people believe her gift is clouded by her grief.

  Syrus – AKA Sur Spear’s familial name.

  Tah-Man-Ea – the great great grandfather of Onamingo and Thunder Horse.

  Taneshewa – Daughter of the Red King Onamingo. Sur Sceaf courts her to be his seventh wife.

  Taneshewa Ithil Aelflaed – The new name Taneshewa receives from Sur Sceaf during the Rite of the Veil in the Secret Place.

  Thor – The Herewardi god of thunder.

  Thunder Beings – The gods of the Sharaka and Red Men

  Thunder Horse – The chief medicine man of the Sharaka and brother of Sagwi and Redith. A shamanic advisor to all who seek wisdom. Called “Coon Boy” when he was little.

  Tlingit Tribe – A gifted sea going tribe of natives living in the North of Panygyrus and through the western parts of La Kanada.

  Tongue of Opression, the – the corruption of the English tongue under Pitter rule.

  Turfrida – Herewardi woman married to the Rabbi Amschel ben Levi. She is sister to Longswan and Sur Sceaf.

  Turtle Duck – A Cherokee man who first lived among the Sharaka but later took on the Herewardi ways of polygamy and moved to the coast to become a merchant of the sea. Mendaka mentions him as a friend.

  Twelver – A wolf-pack or twelve members of a fyrd which constitutes the smallest unit of a fyrd.

  Tyr – The Herewardi god of war and justice. Also known as Tyranis – Another and older name for Tyr. Those of his bloodline are often referred to as the Tyrtons or Teutons, and such is the bloodline of Sur Sceaf.

  Uncle Rat – see Fromer

  Ur-Fyr – The spiritual inspirations as described and felt by the Herewardi. The fire by which all men may be led inward and upward to know God.

  Va-Eyra – Sur Sceaf’s sister, and the daughter of Sur Spear. She is known as the Queen of the High Desert, the Silver Queen, and the Cat Queen. Her see is at Fort Rock and she is High Priestess of the Rose Rood.

  Valkyries – The supernatural escorts of the spirit world, who guide dead warriors to their proper assignments amongst the gods and oft times protect them from harms unknown.

  Vardrop – A genetic doctor and engineer from the far past. One of the creators of the Pitter species, and the Vardrop race.

  Vardropi – A race of trans-humans created by Dr. Vardrop and his wife out of the seed codes of man, wolf, and rat. They inhabit the far north in La Kanada at a place called Quirenopolis of Toront.

  Walners – Quailor family.

  Walter Shanks – a Quailor Doctor gifted since his youth when he performed valuable healings of all manner.

  Walter Wetzel – A Quailor dycon. Fromer tries to involve him in clandestine meetings. He refuses to take part with Fromer in subverting Elijah and Sur Sceaf’s authority.

  Washington – (President George Washington) described as a past chief before the rise of the Evil Generation.

  Whistling Wolf – A Red Man historian of the past. Described the Earth Changes and destruction of civilization in the times of the Amerikans. Wrote that a giant rock fell from the sky and leveled forests for miles around.

  White Beard, The – see Odhin

  White Fire – Sur Sceaf’s stallion.

  White Horse Order/Society – An order created for distinguished men and women of all human tribes, who work for encouraging the perfection of all mankind with in the just and regularly constituted laws of the White Lodge.

  Wild One, the – See Wose

  Wilona –Woon’s Maid, see Saga-Jah-El-Ea

  Wolfpack – A group of twelve warriors within a fyrd.

  Woon – Another name for Odhin.

  Wose – The name for a man of grief, who atones for his losses by extricating himself from society and seeking personal ways to gain rake and ruin over the enemies who have done them harm. Starkwulf becomes the best known wose and is thus called the Wose.

  Wycliff – Sur Spear’s steward.

  Wyrd Sisters – According to the Herewardi, they are the three sisters of fate and preceded the gods and the creation of the earth. They are beings of untold power and hold the keys to all advancement in the heavens.

  Xelph – A Sharaka youth, highly gifted in plant lore and as with many Sharaka, he w
as born with golden hair and raised among the Herewardi according to his parents’ wish. He is both the dear friend of Arundel and Long Swan and like a son to Sur Sceaf.

  Yellow Horse – A little boy found at the battle of Frink Glen. First adopted by Muryh, but raised by Sur Sceaf and later chose to become a Herewardi jester.

  Yenkish, the – a term the Red Men use to describe the rogue tribes of the lands in the north east of Panygyrus.

  Yggd – An old Herewardi wayfaring man, encountered by Sur Sceaf in the High Desert who gives Sur Sceaf prophetic advice for the guidance of the three tribes.

  Yggep Walker – The daughter of Queen Gloomulah of the Poison Lands whose treacherous acts set her up as a spy for the Pitter Zonga of Eugene in an effort to break the gates of the Umpqua and gain great favor with the Emperor.

  Ymma – A Herewardi woman. A “beard” of the Sire Sheaf. Married to Hwita. Spying on the Pitter movements in the East.

  Yoder, Brother – A Quailor man. He was hosting the Dycons at his home when the Massacre at Salem began and in which his wife and unborn child were slain before he could save them.

  Yosepf – Actual name of the young Quailor who gets his wagon stuck in the mud.

  Young Bloods – The highest station of youthful warriors in training. They have obtained the skills to engage in armed combat and partake in military operations.

  Yrnst – nick name of a young Quailor boy driving a wagon that gets stuck in the mud. See Yosepf for actual name.

  Zeru-Herewardi – see El Yid

  Zrael the Shepherd – A Quailor Shepherd whose name was originally Israel.

  Author Biography

  Russ Howard was born in the North end of the Shenandoah Valley. He grew to manhood in rural West Virginia, where the mountaineer culture conveyed to Russ a sense of fierce independence, which is a running theme in his books. In his youth his first passion was for the animals he kept, an assortment of creatures from owls and pigeons to chipmunks and foxes. As he entered adolescence he developed an obsession for running and became an accomplished cross-country and track athlete.
