Acknowledgments
This collection originated in two events: a panel organized by Paul Freed-man for the American Historical Association meeting in New York in 1997 and a graduate seminar on eschatology taught by Caroline Walker Bynum at Columbia University during the academic year 1995–96. During a conversation in the spring of 1997, we saw that by combining the products of these two enterprises we might create a volume that brought together several understandings of “eschatology” pursued only in isolation from each other in recent scholarly literature.
In the end it did not prove possible to include all the papers from both events, but we were able to persuade several distinguished scholars to contribute additional essays that fill out the eschatological landscape we wish to depict. We thank those who participated in the American Historical Association panel and those who were part of Columbia University Seminar G9008–9009. Their conversation, insights, and questions helped both authors and editors of this volume craft what we hope is a coherent and wide-ranging collection. We also thank the two anonymous reviewers of the proposal and the manuscript for their very helpful comments and suggestions. We are grateful to Victoria Velsor for her hard work in editing and regularizing the citations and style of the different contributions and for preparing the index.
