  VOR’CHA-CLASS

When the Vor’cha-class attack cruiser entered service in 2365 it was the most advanced and largest ship in the Klingon fleet. Ships of this class were intended as a direct replacement for the ageing K’Tinga-class and followed the same basic layout, but the technology was completely rethought from a 23rd-century perspective. The decision to develop ships of this nature was taken by K’mpec himself, who hoped this new class of ship would reinforce his own position within the Empire and provide a realistic counterpart to large Federation and Romulan vessels such as the Galaxy- and D’deridex-classes. As such the Vor’cha was also far larger than the K’Tinga-class and could effectively be a small mobile town—for example when serving as the flagship—or a troop transport.

Before this, the Klingon shipyards had attempted to produce the same results by scaling up the Bird-of-Prey to vast sizes.

Initially, very few Vor’cha-class ships were available and they were controlled only by high-ranking officials and the leaders of the Great Houses. The prototype, the I.K.S. Vor’cha became K’mpec’s flagship until he was poisoned by fellow High Council member Duras. However, the design rapidly gained favour and soon formed a significant part of the Klingon Defense Force. They were made from standard Klingon components and could be easily mass produced. As a result they played a major role in the Dominion War.

  NEGH’VAR-CLASS

When Gowron became High Chancellor of the Klingon Empire he immediately commissioned a new and upgraded version of the attack cruiser that would serve as his flagship. The result was the I.K.S. Negh’var, a heavily armed vessel that is still the largest ship ever to serve in the Klingon Defense Force. Fitted with 20 disruptors and four torpedo launchers, she was a flying arsenal and was able to carry more than 2,500 troops.

To date the Negh’var is the only ship of its class and it is widely regarded as an anomaly that was created to show Gowron’s prestige rather than for legitimate military reasons. The Negh’var was rushed into service and employed many experimental technologies that were considered impractical for mass production, and had such a high energy output that it required significant re-engineering of the cloaking system that pushed its power requirements to the absolute limit.

Most Klingon commanders believe that in strictly military terms the resources needed to produce ships of this class would be better devoted to producing a larger number of smaller ships. Nevertheless, the Negh’var was an impressive sight that inspired fear in almost any species that encountered her. She served as Gowron’s flagship during the Dominion War, and led the Klingon invasion of Cardassian space in 2372. However, when Martok assumed power he had little time for the Negh’var, preferring to keep his flag aboard the B’rel-class I.K.S. Rotarran.
