Summer with the Soldier

  He grinned and oh-so-gently nibbled on one of the tips of my breasts. I clutched his short hair and my head fell back, offering more of myself to him.

  His hands moved over the tiny mound of my belly and he pulled back to look down at it. “Our baby is here.”

  “Yes.”

  He shifted me in his arms so he could reach my midsection with his mouth. He rained kisses over my stomach and my heart stuttered in my chest.

  “You’re happy,” I said, awe coming through in my tone.

  “I didn’t know it was possible for me to be this happy.” He stood, continuing to cradle me in his arms. “Now I want to show you just how happy you’ve made me.”

  I grinned at him and looped my arms around his neck. “I can’t wait.”

  “And you don’t have to.” He moved us toward my bedroom.

  And in that instant I knew why I hadn’t been worried about finding the perfect job or getting another degree or doing any of the things my friends had been striving for.

  My happily ever after had nothing to do with a job or another degree or traveling the world. It had everything to do with the man holding me in his arms. And building our family together, starting with the little life we’d already created.

  I’d found everything I ever wanted without leaving my own backyard.
