Emperor Hui to offer Furong favors and demand that he teach near the palace, but Furong refused on both counts, incurring the Emperor’s wrath. Later, the Emperor forgave him and built him a temple at Furong, where he moved and taught many students for the rest of his life, revitalizing the monastic standards of the Caodong School.
Furong Lingxun: 芙蓉靈訓 [Fuyō Reikun]. Ca. ninth century, China. Dharma heir of Guizong Zhichang, Nanyue Line. Taught at Mount Furong, Fu Region (Fujian). His posthumous name is Great Master Hongzhao, 弘照大師 [Kōshō Daishi].

Fuyan Qingyuan: 佛眼清遠 [Butsugen Seion]. 1067–1120, China. Dharma heir of Wuzu Fayan, Linji School. Taught at Longmen Monastery, near Luoyang (Henan). Given the title of Zen Master Fuyan, 佛眼禪 師 [Butsugen Zenji], by the Emperor.
Fuyin Liaoyuan: 佛印了元 [Butchin Ryōgen]. 1032–1098, China. Dharma heir of Kaixian Shanxian, Yunmen School. Taught at many monasteries, including Mount Yunju, Hong Region (Jiangxi). His posthumous name is Zen Master Fuyin, 佛印禪師 [Butchin Zenji]. Known for his association with Su Dongpo.

Ganges: Skt., Gangā. 恒河 [gōga]. A river in northern India, flowing from the Himālaya Mountains generally eastward through a vast plain. Buddhism rose and developed along this river. Sacred to Brāhmanism in ancient times and Hinduism in later times up to the present day.
Ganges, sands of the: 恒河沙 [gōga sha], 恒沙 [gōsha]. 恒河沙數 [gōga shasū], literally the number of the sands of the Ganges. An innumerable amount.
Gao, novice: 高沙彌 [Kō Shami]. Ca. eighth–ninth century. A student of Yaoshan Weiyan, Qingyuan Line. After leaving Mount Yaoshan, he lived in a hut and taught passersby.
Gaoan Dayu: 高安大愚 [Kōan Daigu]. Ca. ninth century, China. Dharma heir of Guizong Zhichang, Nanyue Line. He taught in Gaoan, Rui Region (Jiangxi), where his teaching was instrumental in the enlightenment of Linji Yixuan, founder of the Linji School. He was also the teacher of Moshan Liaoran, the most prominent female teacher in the early Zen School.
