Chapter 14
"Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."
― Alexander Pope
John sat in his office holding his head in his hands. "More recruiting," he moaned. "Another trip to Hell." Peira appeared behind him and began rubbing his neck and shoulders. "Oh, that feels so good."
"You’ve had a long, stressful day. But you’ve done well," she said. John smiled.
"I… didn’t know this was in your job description. Something beyond being a… sounding board."
"I have many responsibilities. I’m a sympathetic ear, a sounding board, a defender, a guide, a chastiser, a compassionate comforter. Feeling comforted?"
She continued rubbing and John moaned in pleasure. Knowing it was Peira made him feel all the more soothed.
"Oh, yes. How does an angel know so much about muscle tension?"
Peira moved to stand in front of John. John looked at her with longing. She didn’t seem to mind.
"I’m a made angel, John, not a natural one. I lived among the living, and I have had every experience. I can do all kinds of things… very well."
"Does that mean what I think it means?"
Peira’s angelic light came on softly. "Earthly rules don’t apply here. But we don’t know each other. Proceed slowly. What you are thinking changes a relationship."
John rose, then stepped to her to embrace her. She raised her hand and made a "slow down" motion.
Wham!
William slammed against the outside window, breaking John’s spell. John went to the window and looked out. He saw William angrily and wildly swinging his sword at Jerry and Persiphus, who were having fun jumping around and taunting him.
John poked his head out the door and called out, "Mary!" He looked around inside. Peira was gone. But a fresh box of chocolates sat open on his desk. He smiled.
