Once the gym was finally empty, I strolled casually towards Finn, trying to look innocent.

“You did great, Captain,” I began, trying to sound serious.

“That was literally my nightmare. I literally wake up in a cold sweat after dreaming about that kind of terror,” Finn said, pretending to glare at me. “Why are these kids only obsessed with my gun and where police officers stop to use the bathroom?”

“Well, they don’t have guns, and they do have to use the bathroom. It’s pretty much their only topics of conversation,” I said, laughing.

“And I thought public speaking in front of adults was awful. That was terrifying,” he said, looking up at the ceiling and stretching his back.

“Nah, you did great. You’re a natural speaker. Except you did mess up a few times,” I pointed out.

“How?” Finn asked, looking at me with a confused expression.

“You kept calling me Officer Carter instead of Officer Miller,” I said, laughing. “You’ve done it all day long, with every grade level you talked to. I didn’t want to say anything because I know you hate giving speeches and I didn’t want to sound like I was criticizing.”

  “Really? How weird.”

“I know, I don’t why you’d get our names mixed up. You must have been nervous,” I agreed.

“No, I mean… how weird that you thought it wasn’t on purpose.” Finn looked at me with a strange expression, and I watched his face for a moment.

Before I could ask him what he meant, he got down on one knee in the center of the gym and pulled a small box out of his pocket. He looked up at me, smirking at what must have been the most shocked look I’d ever worn.

“I figured the kids should get used to hearing you called ‘Officer Carter,’ V. That is, if you’ll marry me.”

The room was spinning as his words penetrated my brain. He was serious. He actually meant it. All I could do was silently nod, my tearful smile making him grin. He slipped the ring on my finger and stood up, taking my hands in his.

Suddenly, the curtain on the stage opened beside us. Dozens of teachers had been waiting and now cheered, clapping for us and letting go of a number of balloons. A few of them threw confetti in our direction as they called out their congratulations.

“You planned this?” I asked, laughing. “A romantic proposal in the elementary school gym?”

“Yup. It’s where you finally felt at home, and these people care about you a great deal. You’re their hero, so I couldn’t think of a more meaningful place,” Finn said, looking around to see if there were any students nearby before kissing me quickly.

“Well, you’re my hero, Finn. I love you,” I said, smiling at him one last time before we were surrounded by my coworkers.

“I love you too, V. And I always will.”

  About the Author

Nadine is a sloppy romantic at heart. She loves to curl up on her front porch swing in the mornings with her extra large cup of coffee and lose herself in a blissfully, butterfly-filled, pure romance story. However, her guilty pleasures are found within the pages of the steamy romances with sexy alpha’s that ignite temptation, desire, and lust.

As much as she enjoys reading romances, she enjoys writing them even more. She thrives on the opportunity to give her readers the chance to escape into the chiseled arms of their latest book boyfriend and leave them fantasizing days later.

She has been punching keys for years and now that she has built up a collection of heartthrobs, she is ready to finally share them with the world.
