Phoenix Rising

“I was hoping you would come tonight.”
“I wasn’t sure that I should. I was worried that we weren’t ready.”
“We’re ready,” he said confidently. “We did this all wrong last time. But now, we’re ready for this, and we’re going to do it right this time.”
“No strip clubs?”
“No random fucking either. It’s you and I. Just like Michael says.”
“Michael, huh?”
Chance shrugged with a smile. “Let’s just say that I was introduced to Mr. Bublè when the guys and I were all trying to relax in a hot tub.”
“Really,” I smiled, trying to hold back my laughter.
“It was quite the introduction,” he said as we swayed to the music. “There were wine coolers and bubbles; the whole thing went off the rails.”
“Sounds like us.”
He rested his forehead against mine as he swayed with me.
I am glad at least in my life I found someone, he sang so quietly that almost didn’t hear.
That may not be here forever to see me through
But I found my strength in you
‘Cause in my mind, you will stay here always
In love, you and I, you and I, you and I, you and I
In my mind we can conquer the world
In love, you and I, you and I, you and I
And then his lips were on mine and he was kissing me softly, nothing at all like he used to kiss me. It was filled with all the love and promise of the future that we never really had. His hands slid to my face and he cradled me in his arms, kissing me like I was his dying breath. Tears slid down my cheeks as I realized that we were going to be okay. We were starting over, and we were finally the people we were meant to be for each other.
Catcalls sounded around us, but Chance just continued to kiss me and hold me close. That is, until Gabe put on It Had Better Be Tonight.
“Man, I just love me some Bublè,” Gabe said as he started dancing with Isa to the music. I laughed and turned back to Chance, only then seeing the new tattoo that was peeking out from under his shirt.
“What is that?”
He glanced down and then lifted his shirt up for me to see. It was a bird surrounded by flames.
“I don’t understand.”
“It’s a phoenix rising. It’s said that a phoenix rising from the ashes means to emerge from a catastrophe stronger, smarter, and more powerful. Which is exactly what I intend to do. This is just my reminder.”
I nodded, loving the tattoo and what it represented for him.
“So, where do we go from here?” I asked hesitantly.
“Well,” he skimmed his hands up my body and then back down, just rubbing lightly against my ass. “If you’ll allow me to take you home tonight, I’m gonna take you to bed…” He kissed my lips lightly, brushing his lips along my jaw and over to my earlobe. “And then I’m gonna enjoy the fuck out of my hypoallergenic pillows.”
