“I should say the same thing to you,” replied Aria, “because you’re home early. I thought you weren’t returning until tomorrow?”
“There was nothing more I could do there, so I decided to come back early and surprise you not only with my presence but with this Italian dinner.” Wilson gestured to the dining table.
Aria then started to take off her coat, and Wilson quickly came around to her back to help her out of it. Charlie came up to her front, sat down, and looked up at her, eagerly awaiting a pat on the head, which Aria happily obliged before saying “Hello, Charlie. Did you have a nice day with Ella?”
“He certainly did,” said Wilson as he put her coat away in a closet in the foyer.
“Oh, I guess you were surprised to find him with Ella,” Aria realized.
“It’s okay. I should’ve realized you wouldn’t be home all day, and he would be left alone and need to be fed and walked and all.” Wilson also gave Charlie a pat on the head before asking, “Shall we?”
“Let’s,” responded Aria.
Wilson and Aria made their way to the dining room table, with Charlie in tow, probably looking to catch a fallen meatball while they ate, or perhaps a purposely-thrown one by Wilson, since he often did throw food down to Charlie whenever he had eaten alone.
As they ate, however, Aria had trouble concentrating, thinking about Sienna and Lucas. She wondered if they were watching them from outside, waiting to strike at any time. Wilson saw her picking at her pasta, barely taking any bites.
“What’s wrong? Does it taste bad?” asked Wilson.
“Huh?” said Aria, looking up suddenly. “Oh no, the food’s great. Thank you.”
“Then something else is bothering you,” Wilson surmised.
“No. I mean, yes, but I can’t talk about it. Not with you. Not with anyone. It’s…a personal problem.” Aria looked back down at her food and attempted to take a full bite.
“Oh, okay. A woman’s problem then. Perhaps it’s something you can discuss with Ella?”
“No, it’s not that kind of personal problem.”
“But you can’t talk to me about it?”
“No.”
“Well, whatever it is, it’ll eventually work itself out,” suggested Wilson. “Things usually do.” He continued to eat his meal and dropped a meatball for Charlie along the way.
But Aria knew there was only one way this could work out, and that would be to put a stop to the killings. And to put a stop to the killings, she would have to kill her very own sister and her sister’s boyfriend.
Chapter 7
That night, Aria couldn’t sleep. Thankfully, she had the next day off of work and at least would not have to go in tired. She formulated a plan in her head to take Sienna and Lucas down, once and for all, but she also knew the only way she would be strong enough is if she were to attack them in wolf form. To make matters worse, she would also need for them to remain in human form, and she had no idea if they were changing at random times like her, were doing it only during nights of full moons, or were actually able to change at will. She had to know the answer to that in order to correctly work out a plan to take them out.
With Wilson and Charlie both fully deep in sleep and inside Wilson’s own room, Aria got dressed and snuck outside. She carefully crept past Ella’s house as well, not wanting to wake her up, and made her way deep into the forest. There, she hoped she would find Sienna and Lucas.
When she was deep enough in, she called out, “Sienna? Lucas? Are you here?” A rustling of nearby trees led to the answer. Sienna and Lucas were indeed there.
“Hey, sis, aren’t you up a bit late?” asked Sienna, with Lucas’s arms wrapped around her. “We were in the middle of something, weren’t we, hon?”
“Yes, and I would like your sister to leave so that we can finish.”
Aria shuddered at the thought of what they were probably doing there, but still had to ask. “You didn’t.”
“Oh no, we weren’t doing THAT,” answered Sienna. “What do you think we are, serial killers? No, all those people we killed…we had reasons to.”
Aria failed to understand why anyone would have a reason to kill anyone else. Instead, she simply asked, “I have a question.”
“Go for it,” responded Sienna. “Ask me anything.”
“You know that I change at random. Is that also the case for the both of you?” asked Aria.
“Well, that’s a very good question, and I’m glad you’re desiring to embrace the wolf you have become.” Sienna left Lucas to come closer to Aria. Lucas stayed back, looking very sullen at this major disruption of his and Sienna’s lovemaking for a session of questions and answers.
“I am,” Aria lied.
“Lucas was fortunate. When he was turned, he was turned by a wolf that was able to change at will, and thus, he is now able to, too. Then, when he bit me, he gave me that power as well. So in answer to your question,” Sienna explained with a short pause, “no, we don’t change at random like you. In fact, I have no idea why you aren’t able to change at will as well, just like I don’t understand why you aren’t craving the blood of humans when you are in wolf form like we do.”
Aria wondered that, too, but didn’t say so. “Thank you, and I suppose you know that Wilson returned early?”
“Yes. Like I said, we’ve been watching you, and that includes anyone and everyone you talk to,” answered Sienna.
“Ahem. Can we end this soon?” asked Lucas, growing impatient. He crossed his arms and started tapping his feet. Aria couldn’t help but notice the bulge in his pants.
“Yes yes, dear, hold on.” At that, Lucas growled at them as Sienna briefly looked back at him and then back again to Aria. “Any other questions?”
“No, that’s it. Take care, dear sister, and please try not to kill anyone else. I beg you,” Aria pleaded.
“I’m sorry, but we can’t promise anything. After all, we can’t control our desires as wolves.”
“Or as humans, either,” added Lucas, still impatient.
“Goodbye, then,” said Aria.
“Goodnight, Aria,” said Sienna.
As Aria made her way back through the forest and back onto the street that Wilson’s house was on, she heard the faint howls of two wolves deep within, and knew they were continuing the activity she interrupted.
When she got back home, everything was still quiet as she snuck back into her room to continue formulating a plan against Sienna and Lucas.
Chapter 8
The next morning, she used her day off to check on her apartment while Wilson was at work. She looked around carefully as she traveled there, making sure Sienna and Lucas weren’t following her, as they said they would be watching her constantly. She also took her cell in case Wilson calls.
When she got to her apartment, she was thankful that her apartment was empty this time. Her rent was due, so she paid her landlord, and while there, he confirmed that no one had been there since her sister and boyfriend came by a few days before. She urged him to not them in anymore without her permission, as that’s how Sienna and Lucas had gotten in previously. Sienna had told the landlord that she was Aria’s sister, and proved it with the last family photo taken just before Sienna left for New Zealand. Aria used the internet in her apartment to find information on the best way to kill wolves. Wilson did not have internet at home, and besides, she didn’t want the worry that he could come home at any time and see what she was doing. She also didn’t want Ella to see when she came over to pick up Charlie. Ella would surely try to talk her out of the dangerous plan Aria was putting together by herself. Either that or she would alert Wilson, who would surely add to the problem and probably get himself killed in the process. No, this was definitely something Aria was determined to take care of by herself and as quickly as possible.
She made sure all her curtains were closed before going online, ensuring that Sienna and Lucas wouldn’t see what she was up to, and she had planned to erase all traces of her search
es before she left that day. In college she had taken a computer course, and thus she knew exactly how the internet worked and how to delete her search history.
Just like everything she had heard that she previously thought was a myth before she got bitten, the only ways to kill wolves were with a stronger vampire, a stronger wolf, or a silver bullet. She had no idea how to get a silver bullet and could not find information online as to where to find them, and she didn’t know if vampires even existed, let alone a strong one. Her only choice was to hope to become a stronger wolf or find a stronger wolf, and the only stronger wolf she could think of was Lucas…or whoever turned Lucas into a wolf. But how would she find this person?
She started looking for instances of wolf encounters in New Zealand. There was sure to be newspaper articles online somewhere about attacks in New Zealand or at least sightings of wolves there. She also estimated when Lucas could’ve been bitten as a way to narrow down the dates of the attacks. However, she couldn’t find anything. Whoever bit Lucas did a great job of covering up their tracks. And she could ask Lucas, sure, but would he be suspicious of her intentions? Most likely.
Defeated, she cleared her search history and shut down her laptop just before her cell phone rang. It was Wilson.
“Hi, Wilson,” she said, trying to remain calm in lieu of her frustration over ways to take down Sienna and Lucas. “What’s up?”
“Just wanted to let you know I’m going to be getting off work late tonight, so you’ll need to make up your own dinner plans.”
“Sure, no problem,” Aria responded. “What time do you think you’ll be home?”
“Maybe not until after midnight. Got a lot of paperwork to catch up on and other things,” said Wilson. “Don’t stay up for me since you have to wake up early for work tomorrow.”
“No, I won’t, but thanks for letting me know. Bye!”
“Have a nice rest of the day and evening.” At that, Wilson hung up.
With the realization that that night would be the perfect time to act against her sister and Lucas, Aria called Ella next and asked Ella if she could keep Charlie for the night.
“Sure, but what’s going on?” asked Ella.
“Wilson’s working late tonight, and I…have something I need to do. It’s a personal matter.”
“Okay, I won’t pry. Is it alright if I stop by to get more of his dog food, then?”
“Oh, I’m actually not home yet. I’m at my apartment. But please, get what you need to.”
“Will do and I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Yes…and thank you. Bye!”
“Bye!”
Chapter 9
Aria waited until close to the nightfall before heading home. She had dinner and then went down to the basement. She was intending to figure out why she couldn’t change at will, and she had some ideas in mind to try.
She got undressed in order to not ruin her clothes, and went down to the basement. There, she sat on the floor and closed her eyes. She hoped that if she could concentrate on changing hard enough, perhaps she would be able to do it at will, and even better, perhaps she could will herself into a stronger wolf. After just a few minutes, she could feel the stomach pains forming inside her and the need to explode out. But was it really working or did she just happen to be changing at random? She had no idea, but she concentrated through the pains regardless. As soon as she felt close enough to changing but still in human form, she snuck outside, making sure not to be seen by anyone, especially since she was naked. She made her way deep into the forest, and then jumped up and changed into a wolf right when she attempted to will herself to. Could it really be working? she thought to herself.
She then continued running, looking around, hoping to find Sienna and Lucas once again inside. She eventually got her wish when she stopped in a clearing and heard rustling coming from the trees.
“Well well, look who’s here,” said Lucas, who was the first one to show himself.
“Dear sister is in her wolf form,” added Sienna. “Why are you here? You know we can’t force you to kill a human.”
Since Aria could not respond in this form, she simply growled at the two of them. She then crouched down as if to challenge them to a fight.
“Seriously? Do you really think you can take us down all by yourself?” asked Lucas, in response.
Aria held her stance.
“There’s your answer, Lucas,” said Sienna.
“But do you really think you can kill your own sister?” asked Lucas.
“I don’t want to, of course,” responded Sienna, “but if she is determined to stop us from having any fun and fulfilling our need for human blood, I’ll do what I have to do.”
As if on cue, Lucas changed into a wolf, his clothes breaking off in pieces. He became a large, dark gray wolf and went into a crouching position just like Aria, baring his own fangs in a growl. Sienna followed, turning into a black wolf just like Aria, but unlike Aria, Sienna had white streaks that matched the white streaks of her human hair, something she had had done on a whim as a college girl in New Zealand before she was turned.
Lucas gestured toward Sienna, like he was saying “Ladies first”, and Sienna immediately went in for the first attack, crouching down and then jumping at Aria, who took a step back. Sienna then attempted to jump onto Aria, but she got up on her hind legs and managed to push Sienna away, causing her to fall backwards onto her back.
Lucas then jumped out of his crouch and caught Aria off-guard, pushing her onto her back. He held her down with his paws and then bared his fangs once again as he loomed over her. Sienna rolled over and then joined him, looming over from Aria’s side as Lucas began to bend downwards toward her, possibly to bite her.
However, Aria felt a sudden strength within her and pushed him off, managing to cause him to crash into a nearby tree. She then immediately turned toward Sienna and swiped a paw at her, but Sienna ducked out of the way and took a swipe back, causing a gash across Aria’s cheek. Aria howled in temporary pain from the injury but then attempted to swipe at Sienna once again, this time managing to injure her as well, right across her right eye.
As Sienna temporarily cowered back, closing her eyes, Lucas got up again for another attack, managing to get his revenge by pushing Aria into a tree as well. He then took the opportunity to jump at her once again as she rose, feeling quite dizzy. He landed on her back this time, making it hard for her to get him off her as she shook her body around like crazy as Lucas dug his claws into her to hold on for dear life and also hurt her. Sienna then approached her, baring her fangs and growling, but right when she was about to take her own swipe at Aria’s eyes, a gunshot rang out in the distance.
Wilson appeared out of nowhere, holding a gun. “Stop or I’ll shoot!”
But Aria knew that that would be useless against Lucas and Sienna, and now Wilson was about to be killed because of her. As she was thinking this, she felt a sudden pang in her neck as Lucas dug his fangs into her, and she started to falter as Sienna ignored Wilson and raised herself up for another attack. But just when she got onto her hind legs, a “bang” rang out, and she fell backwards. Then another “bang” and Aria felt Lucas let go and fall off her. As both wolves were passed out, Aria felt faint as well. The last thing she saw before she blacked out was Wilson running towards her, taking off his jacket along the way.
Chapter 10
Aria awoke to a nurse checking her vital signs. One look around told her she was in a hospital bed. She tried to get up, but the nurse carefully pushed her back down. “There there, dear. You’re going to be fine, but we need to keep you here for a few days.”
“But…how did I get here? Where’s my friend, Detective Wilson Parker?” Aria hoped her worst fear hadn’t come true. That Wilson was dead and that she somehow still got away. Maybe her sister felt sorry for her after all and left her here? No, that couldn’t be true. Her sister and Lucas were determined to kill her last night. There was no way they would let her go…but then why isn’t she
dead? As these thoughts ran through her head, the nurse answered her question.
“He went down to the cafeteria to get a cup of coffee. He’ll be back soon, I promise.”
Relieved, Aria lay back down, just as Wilson appeared in the doorway behind the nurse.
“Well look who’s finally awake,” said Wilson, coffee cup in hand.
“She was just worried about you,” said the nurse. “I had to force her to stay in bed.”
“I’m here now, Aria, don’t worry,” said Wilson, who then came closer to Aria’s side.
“I’m done here. I’ll leave you two alone now,” said the nurse.
“Thank you,” said Wilson.
“I’ll check on you later, Aria,” the nurse then said to Aria just before leaving, keeping the door closed behind her.
“What happened last night? How did I get here? Why aren’t you dead? Are Sienna and Lucas still alive?” Aria shot out questions like a machine gun.
“Sienna and Lucas? Were they the wolves that were attacking you?” questioned Wilson, not in cop mode but still acting like a friendly detective.
“Yes, but they’re also my sister and her boyfriend. They were the ones who have been killing people here and in Massachusetts,” Aria propped herself up a little to speak more clearly. “I’m sorry, I wanted to tell you when I found all this out days ago, but they said they’d kill you if I told you.”
Wilson sat down in the chair by her bedside as he took all this in. “Oh…wow. That’s an interesting development.”
“So…answer my questions, please!”
“They’re dead.”
“But…how?”
Wilson pulled out a bullet from his coat pocket. It was made of silver, the kind that kills wolves.
“Where did you…?”
“I heard of that myth and found a place that sells them up in Boston. I wasn’t going to use it on you, of course, but I just had this feeling that other wolves had to be involved somehow…and what do you know, I was right!” Wilson smiled.
