“Sam if you don't hurry we'll be late,” Chris said.

“If everyone would let me alone I would already be dressed and we wouldn't be late,” I said.

He came in the room smiling and turned as though to go since I was just pulling up my stockings.

  “Please don't leave,” I said.

“You know you're beautiful?” he said.

  “You're just prejudice,” I said.

“That may be, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks you're beautiful,” he said.

“I don't think mom approves of my choice of clothes. I'm sure if she finds out this dress is slit up the side to my waist she'd have a fit about it too,” I said.

“Sam does it really matter what she thinks? I thought you dressed how you like, not how others think you should dress,” he said.

“I just get so tired of the disapproving stares she gives me all the time,” I said.

I slid on my shoes and we walked out to the living room together. Mom and dad were both sitting there dad playing with the girls teasing them the way he did us kids when we were young. Jeff was sitting there as well, but he looked worried about something. I could see he wanted to tell me something, something he hadn't told anyone else yet, and whatever it was, he wasn't yet sure how to express. We were going to have to talk when Chris and I got back from our dinner.
