She lifted her knees to her chest.

“What are you doing?” I rolled to my side and propped my head up with my hand to better view her.

“Trying to keep your sperm inside me. Maybe we’ll get lucky on our first attempt.” She looked over at me, a smile in her eyes.

“My guys are fighters,” I said with a laugh, and my words had her cheeks lifting with a broad smile. “But to be on the safe side, we should do this about fifty more times before we leave this island.”

She lowered her legs. “Fifty?” She chuckled. “We leave in two days.”

“I extended our trip. One more week.”

“What?” Her mouth opened in shock, and she moved to her side and pressed a palm flat to my chest.

My eyes lingered on the swell of her breasts as she took in a deep breath, and then my attention traveled to her pouty mouth. “We still haven’t gone snorkeling, and I was hoping maybe you’d change your mind.”

“You’re so persistent.” She bit into her bottom lip, her eyes lifting as if in thought.

“I got you, didn’t I? Winning your heart wasn’t the easiest of feats.”

“Like you said . . . you’re a fighter. No way would you give up without getting me.”

“Mm. And I’ll never give up on you.” I slanted my lips over hers to steal a quick kiss. “Never give up on us. And I’ll always lay everything on the line to keep you safe. To keep you happy.”

She touched her forehead to mine and whispered, “Ditto.”

“I’m gonna go bloody nuts waiting. Are you sure it hasn’t been two minutes yet?”

I fidgeted with the hem of my black tee and stared at the closed bathroom door. “I’m not ready to look.”

He reached for my hand and held it tight. “We’ll never know if we don’t open that door.”

“What if it’s negative?” My pulse raced, my palms grew sweaty.

“Then we keep trying. And the trying part is pretty damn fun if you ask me.” He pulled me into his arms and kissed me.

We were finally at the home we built in Dublin, and it’d been three weeks since we left Bora Bora, and well, my period was three days late.

That was a good sign, but what if . . .

“If it’s negative you promise we start trying again? I mean, I doubt I’m ovulating,” I said with a smile, “but practice makes perfect.”

“Yeah, and I think we’ll need to practice a few times a day. What do you think?”

“Maybe we start right this second?” I stepped back and peeled off my black tee and flung it.

His eyes dropped to my breasts, but he lifted his hands in the air between us. “Nice try, but you can’t distract me with sex.” He looked back over his shoulder at the en suite bathroom door. “First, we get the results. And then after, regardless, we make love.”

“Fine.” I grabbed my T-shirt and slipped it back over my head.

He took hold of my hand and guided me toward the bathroom, my heartbeat skipping a few beats in the process.

Once the door was open, I pressed my free hand over my eyes, too nervous. “You look first.”

“No.” He reached for my wrist and lowered my arm to my side. “We do this together.” His thumb swept a small circle over my cheek, and he leaned in to plant another kiss on my lips. “Whatever happens, it’s what’s meant to be. Okay?”

I swallowed my nerves and nodded. “You’re right.”

We both took a calming breath and went over to the pregnancy stick atop the vanity counter, but I snapped my eyes closed before I could see whether there were one or two pink lines.

“Two lines means you and . . . a baby?”

  My stomach dropped.

“Is that what you see?” I opened one eye and forced myself to look at his palm.

Two pink lines. Two very dark pink lines.

“Oh my God.” I stepped back and covered my mouth.

“Told you my boys are fighters.” Tears welled in his eyes as he stared at me.

“We’re pregnant?” I whispered and brought my hand to my abdomen as if I’d feel my first kick already. “Is there really a part of you inside of me?”

He set the stick down and placed his palm over my heart. “I’d like to think I’m already here,” he said in a low voice as a tear hit his cheek, and I could feel the tears from my eyes falling as well. “But yes, my love, you’ve got my child in ya now.”

I looped my arms around my husband, never wanting to let go. “I’m so happy. Thank you.”

“Imagine your happiness and multiply it by a thousand—that’s what I’m feeling.” His brows knitted, and his voice broke. “Thank you for coming to Dublin. Thank you for trusting me with your heart.” His Irish brogue traveled through his speech more prominently than normal, which usually happened when he became emotional.

“I wouldn’t trust it with anyone else,” I whispered and leaned into his embrace for a kiss.
