Nicola's affair with the Chinese lecturer, Xeng, has resulted in her moving to China to be with him but all too soon it goes wrong. Xeng has gone missing and Nicola is dragged before a 'court' to be accused of crimes against the state, including seducing a Chinese national!This is only the start of Nicola's ordeals: punished by the women who hold her, sentenced to hard labour by a court, all resulting in a gradual breakdown of all she has known or been.
